Getting down to the end of seedlings that are going to bloom this summer. I think I have just one more before I start deciding which are staying and which will be composted.

This is seedling #17 of the summer of 2014.

Thank-you, Amy. I tip my hat to you. I appreciate the feedback. Many of these seedlings won't be staying, but I have had the most fun watching them open and bloom this summer. It really has been a learning curve for me. nodding

Alex - Are you looking for something in particular in your seedling blooms? The bloom photos you've posted have shown some VERY nice blooms and plants!

Becky...great question. I am looking for 'great genes' in plants that I admire from the various hybridizers. I certainly cannot afford to buy all the daylilies I love, and do not have the space for such a huge garden. I grow about 85 sdlgs. That's all the space available to me just for sdlgs. This year, I probably will keep only 6 of those 18 sdlgs...and that's a lot. I then can take the pollen of the new sdlgs. that I decided to keep, and cross pollinate it with my own plants. All the sdlgs. I have shown on ATP this summer were purchased from seeds sold on the LA. Last year, I was looking for Polston and John Benz genes along with Grace, Decaire, Gossard and a few others. I freeze all the pollen from my own plants in those little vials that I fill with sterile cotton (using Ed Burton's method), and then place those vials back in the little plastic box that houses the vials, then back in the freezer. Very efficient, compact system.

Becky....Larry's Grace's wife commented several years ago about how she hybridizes. What was she looking for in her hybridizing program?. She made a very simple statement. She said, ''she just liked putting pretty, on pretty''. Whistling

My best sdlg of the summer is 'Fantastic Fringe X Fringy'. Great plant habit, perfect fan shape on single fan. Y shaped branching. Strong 22" scape approx, 12 to 14 buds. The blooms are lovely, consistent, and biscuit shaped. The edge is large, and shows great promise as the plant ages.

This one is really different Ed, I like it! Hope it continues to look that way with the rest of the blooms. Unless...you don't like it, then maybe it should do something more.. normal Smiling

That is a lovely seedling Alex, sounds like you have a plan for managing seedlings in your small space. Thumbs up

Thanks Char, the second bloom opened today and it was exactly the same, this one is almost the exact of what I like to do, but I'm awestruck with the garden prescience of that seedling, I hope it continues and is fertile.

Alex I love your last seedling posted, like the look a lot.
I'm glad that you found my pollen storing method useful.
I wish you luck with the Polston line as I find it rather frustrating here.
I'm also having a hard time getting some of the Gossard's to set pods, but they sure are great performing plants.

Sometimes I wish I only had room for 85 seedlings and could do as well as Alex in such a small area.
Nice seedlings Ed, really like the polychrome best.
This was reblooming yesterday on a tall scape. I flaged it to watch another year.

It is such a treat to look at all your beautiful flowers, and hope that some day I might be able to try my luck at developing a few of my own. Do any of you remember the name of Marion Hagerstrom?? He was a dear, very talented person who lived not far from me and he introduced many of our fruit and flowers of today. He didn't know me from Adam, but when I visited him, he gave me a dozen of his newest seedlings as I suspect he knew he was dying. They have a number but no names, and I will keep them forever in his memory. He is the one who made me love Daylilies, so I hope to try hybridizing some day soon. My avatar is The Band Played On which Mr. Stamile so kindly named after my grandson who died in an auto crash. I hope to do something with that and one of my Hagerstrom lilies. I just have to live long enough!!!

Good morning from a little chilly Massachusetts. Flowers are taking longer to open up with the cooler mornings but the colors have been great! I like many have tried my hand at a little hybridizing. There are a couple of plants I've been interested in working with. Isabelle Rose by my friend, Ellen Laprise is one I have been interested in since it was introduced. The four pics below are all from a cross I did of Lavender Blue Baby X Isabelle Rose. The darker purple one is quite tall for it's first bloom, almost 4 feet. I have more from this cross that have yet to bloom, can't wait until they do. Hope everyone has a good day! Karin

Wow! Some excellent crosses!

Cindy - I like the first one (SEXY SALLY X STARGATE PORTAL)! Nice! That is really odd concerning your second photo. I've never seen that happen here.

Karin - Oh my! Every one of your Isabelle Rose siblings are wonderful! Great job hybridizing them!

I missed this first ever bloom on this seedling yesterday morning, so this photo was taken late in the day after rain. There are 4 more buds, so will try to get a pristine photo of at least one of them. I was surprised at the color. I was expecting a pink, not a solid light yellow.

This one is "Tranquil Waters x unknown" from Mike (Hazelcrestmikeb):

KAREN: Oh my goodness, what a lovely story you have shared with us. I would cherish those sdlgs. that were given to you by Mr. Hagerstrom as well, and would try and spread there pollen around to some of your daylilies. Do you have pictures of blooms from those sdlgs? Really sorry to hear about your grandson's passing. Life can be so darn cruel sometimes. "The Band Played On' will forever be etched in my mind with your grandson. What a lovely memorial. Forget your age, and just mush on with your desire to hybridize. Live your passions now. I tip my hat to you.

Ken...You can't go wrong with Rich's seeds. I have many of his sdlgs.. I was wondering about 'FL Becky'. Nice dbl. bloom. Strong looking sdlg.

Fred..... If I had thousands of sdlgs. like you do, I would be pulling my hair out one strand at a time. Because you hybridize to introduce to the public, that creates a huge responsibility. I admire your creativity and hard work, as I do with all the hybridizers who give us these lovely plants. Each sdlg. you have shown us here on ATP is a joy to behold. A 'Lillian' creation is haute couture in the daylily world. So beautiful. I tip my hat to you.
