Life is "mind over matter". If I d
Cat--

Cherokee Purple is mu fave too. I have grown, at least, one plant every year.
Lack of space limits growing too many.

I am sure, anyone that shops at HD, has seen the massive racks of "Bonnies"
herbs and veggies available. Each year--there are more and more Heirloom
tomatoes available, including Cherokee Purple. Big, strong potted plants.
Just look for the beige strip where the varieties' names are written.
Those are heirlooms.... I have seeds...
collected from the earlier years of me growing tomatoes.

Well, it does taste fabulous. For me in my garden it didn't produce that much so I only grew it one season. But it tastes great.

I grew a couple different kinds of cherry tomatoes this year. I'd like to do a regular tomato plant next year to go along with the cherry tomatoes but it's hard to decide which one to choose, especially when I don't have a lot of space set aside for veggies!

Go with one of the tried and true hybrids that have been around for a long time. Better production and disease resistance than with the heirlooms. For an all around great red slicing tomato I would recommend Better Boy.

Celebrity has been recommended for Maryland as well, and it made plenty of nice shaped, decent sized pretty fruit for me. Early Girl made the most, but smaller, like cutting up for salad.
It really is nice when you can plant several kinds and have choices.
I didn't plant any cherry/grape types this year. Sungold sure taste fantastic and are good for snacking in the garden.
Plant it and they will come.

I really hadn't ever tried the colored tomatoes before....
I know a lot of folks really like them...

Glad to hear the Cherokee Purple is easily available to try...
HD does have a good selection of tomato plants in the spring.
Gita, you'll have to let us know when they come in...

Life is "mind over matter". If I d
As far as cherry tomatoes go--YES! "Sungold" is a very tasry one.
As the name suggests--it is yellowish-orange when ripe.

The most prolific one has to be the "Yellow pear". It is still making
some to eat on my bush. It is sweet--not acidly.
I also like "Sweet 1oo's" . Just grab a hand-full when you walk by....

I also like that the seeds are, usually, located around the outer
psrt of the Tomato. Easy to collect and save. Sweet..not acidy.

I do really agree about your assessment of Sungold. I have to say it is simply a fabulous tomato.

I also love the very similar Sun Sugar. Thumbs up

Life is "mind over matter". If I d
Earlier this season, I asked one of the people delivering more Bonnies
veggies in pots--why they no longer carried "Sun Gold"?
He said that they still have it--it is just known as "Sun Sugar" now.
Just a name change.... I will check it out this coming season.

Maybe I am wrong on this.....thinking one of the small, red, sweet cherries
are the ones with the name change??? G.

Well, I could easily see them telling Bonnie staff to promote it as ' just a name change,' whether it is official or not.
Plant it and they will come.

It is not a name change. There is both Sun Gold and Sun Sugar. They are very similar but not the same one.

Guess last night's freeze finally ended my veggie gardening for the year....

My pepper plants are still covered with blossoms and little 2" peppers.
I'd ordered one of those clear plastic covers to throw over the cages I
grow the peppers in, in the hopes of getting the little peppers to freezing size.
But the cover hadn't arrived yet, and last night freeze looks like it did the
plants in... Grumbling

Guess I should have thrown something over them.. D'Oh!
But I do have to say, this is the longest they've ever lasted and
produced so, guess I should be happy with that.

Life is "mind over matter". If I d
Donna--
If you have any old sheets, you can cut them up and use to cover plants.
Use clothespins to hold them to your shelving or whatever.

If nothing else--take some tall garden stakes--stick them in the soil around
the plant/pot and clip the clothes pins to the stakes.

Also--as far as lg clear plastic covers go--you can get 50 gal-size clear
trash bags at HD, Cut them open if this helps. Gita

Great Ideas Gita... Wish I would have mentioned it before.
But, I'll do that tonight... and hope to get some more of
those peppers to size..

Thank You!
