Here we are at the end of summer for some and in the thick of the hottest season for others.

The thumbnail photo is Summer Dream, the Fryer floribunda. There's also another Summer Dream, a Warriner hybrid tea, pictured below:

I'm gaining a stronger appreciation for overhead watering by hand. I've been planting short perennials between my roses to cut down on the empty spaces that are so inviting to grassy weeds. It has been hot, so I'm hand watering those perennials every day. Despite the heat, the roses around these perennials are putting out so much new growth, including new basal canes! The roses that are hit by the timed sprinklers are also displaying some new growth, but nothing like the ones in the hand-watered locations.

Summer Dream is luscious! Most of my roses are looking good too Zuzu, I supplement with hand watering every couple of days. Lady Emma Hamilton is full of blooms again:

And Brothers Grimm looks as lush as it's first spring flush. It will bloom like this at least two more times. I have two of them now.

Love that Brothers Grimm! Is that tall plant near the dish gazebo a hollyhock?

This is the month to watch for the annual updating of the Palatine site. As soon as they remove the "sold out" notices, they'll also be adding next season's plants. So exciting! This year they're starting the buying season later -- September 8th instead of September 1st.

No, to the left of the gazebo. Tall plant with orange and melon-colored blooms. Maybe it's a climbing rose.

And a few days ago, a pair of quail bought their brood of 10-12 tiny chicks for a visit, they now come through the garden every day, starting with a pass by the patio slider. This morning I took the second and third shot through the glass patio door and you can see proud papa on top of the arbor watching a portion of his brood down below.

Paradise!

You have so many roses in the "fruity-melty" shades Hortensia used to talk about in the DG Rose Forum. Just lovely!

Sue your garden is incredible! I also liked the ears and the quail family pictures. Nothing very scenic here; we need rain.

Mike - You gotta open it up & look all the way down to the bottom right. All you see is the tippy-tips of 2 fuzzy ears.

OK, NOW I see them ! LOL
Where I am, when I see ears like that they're usually attached to the head of a raccoon or a possum.

Speaking of "critters", I saw a squirrel devouring a huge clump of rose hips from my Dream Weaver rose the other day, which I had left on the sidewalk. He didn't seem to like any of the other ones, just the Dream Weaver's. Go figure.

My Dream Weaver has huge hips this year also! We're canning this week--maybe I'll make rose jelly? It's my first time canning, so we're experimenting with all kinds of stuff. I had one jar erupt all over the place yesterday as it was cooling. What causes that? I need to find a forum for canning, I guess!
Last night we had a massive storm. Today the grass is brilliant glowing green from all the lightning. It looks like we got a little over 2" of rain....in less than 1 hour. The weather service said winds were 70 mph at the Air Force Base near me and I don't doubt it, judging by the size of pots that blew around the yard.
I think today should be just a gardening day. I'll finally plant the roses that have been patiently waiting in pots, and prune the HTs for fall bloom, and maybe start the fall garden!
If I can resist pulling weeds, that is. I love weeding right after a good rain!
Too bad today is payroll day and I can't *really* devote the whole day to gardening. Sigh...I hate it when work gets in the way of play. Lovey dubby
Remember that children, marriages, and flower gardens reflect the kind of care they get.
