Cindi - I figured that y'all got hit pretty bad with those storms that brew here & then build up heavily on the plains. The plains have been getting a LOT of welcoming moisture this summer.. it's gonna be a good year for them finally (it was looking like a Dustbowl last year). Sad thing is that it builds on the mountains, blows right over town, and then beats the snot outta the plains less than 10 miles from me and I don't get a drop. Bleh!

Right now, only have like one rose that's looking gorgeous.. Voluptuous! Everyone else is getting ready to explode I hope... this has been a sparse year for blooms because winter would NOT let go.

Colorado Springs is going to look like a rainforest if all this rain keeps up!
I'm hoping for more here tonight. When I planted roses today, I noticed the dirt just a few inches down was bone dry. It actually was hard work getting all the holes dug. Not sure why I didn't get that work done this spring! Some of the roses were bare root ones that I grew in big tubs, though. I couldn't put them out while it was windy and hot, when their leaves and stems were still tender. Good As Gold has big blowsy gorgeous blooms now....in the tub!

I like all the new weeks roses! Funny thing, though, I bought Anna's Promise and Doris Day at a California nursery this spring. I guess they get them a year early out there? The one I didn't see, that I have to have, is:

This is an improved version of Westerland! It sounds wonderful.
Toni, did you notice the parents on Take It Easy? Teeny Bopper x Double Red Knock Out! It has lovely hybrid tea type buds and "real" rose form for all those people who think Knock Outs don't look like "real" roses. Sticking tongue out

Above All was included in Toni's link, but it was captioned 'Top of the World.'

I wish Weeks would break down and hire a proofreader. In addition to the two roses captioned with the same name, one of the paragraphs of text begins with this irritating phrase: "Who would of thought..."

A poster on display in the Weeks booth at a trade show had a blooper, so of course I pointed it out to the rep there. He defensively said he didn't write it, but the publicity people who made the posters knew their jobs, so it was probably correct. Uh, no. I felt like saying, don't turn your back, buddy, I have a red pen in my purse and a license to use it!

Cindi - I did see that double knockout was a parent of that rose & thought that to be very surprising! But if it truly has that silvery pink undertone then maybe I can find a space for it here. I wonder if it'll be as boring in real life as Ketchup & Mustard turned out too be though...

Weeks is calling it the "Easy To Love" series of roses. Easy Going, Livin Easy, Easy Does It, and Take It Easy is the newest one. I'm hoping for a white and yellow one named Over Easy!
Hot Cocoa, Julia Child, Cinco de Mayo are the others, and I have to admit, every one of those are star performers here.
I will be adding Take It Easy, Above All, and another Anna's Promise. And their other new red one...can't fine it now, maybe they are waiting another year on it. It was in one of the trade mags.
The Weeks rep came and talked to our club. I think there's going to be some decent ones coming down the pike.

My beautiful Etude climbing rose bit the dust this year.

Rose (Rosa 'Etude')

When I saw Pretty in Pink Eden among the early 2015 introductions, I thought it would be the perfect replacement, but even Regan Nursery is selling it only as an own-root rose. I hope this isn't the wave of the future, but I'm afraid it is.

Something happened today that reminded me of the reason I'm really frustrated with so many of the own-root hybrid teas I bought through the years from Vintage Gardens. They started out as one-cane plants, of course, and most of them remained one-cane plants forever. One of them recently put out a new basal cane, but today I saw that the original cane is dying. That's so common in those roses! They have occasionally produced new basal shoots, but as soon as the new shoot starts growing in earnest, the original cane dies and has to be removed, as if they were trained to never be anything more than one-cane wonders. Grumbling

Zuzu ...

I've tried my best not to put my two cents in on this subject, but reports from one garden and one nursery can create a bias. Here's a few shots of own root roses that have put out plenty of basals and are vigorous plants. It always depends on the rose. Mother Nature has the last word.

I think blanket statements about own root vs budded are misleading to those who are new to growing roses.

I do have some budded roses and love them, but I don't think all own root roses are not vigorous garden roses.

But yours aren't hybrid teas. I'm talking about own-root hybrid teas.

Good point. I didn't realize you were specifically talking about HTs.

I only have a few HTs in this garden so I can't speak from personal experience. I don't think my experience in growing them in containers is comparable. Maybe someone else can share their experience.

I grow mostly old garden roses which are all growing on their own roots. Grafted roses don't do well for me - not because they are grafted but because of who they are, I don't tend my roses well enough for hybrid teas or floribundas to thrive for very long. As Lyn has said, it depends on the rose. (And the person growing it.) One can hope that the new varieties being offered own root have been proven to do well in that form.

I just realized I have four own root HTs, but they are juvenile plants. They've only been in the ground for two seasons and with this drought I am hesitant to judge them in any way other than the fact that they are alive ... Smiling

I have many own-root hybrid teas that do well, but I have many more that don't. Most of the ones that grow well came from Amity, which is no longer in business, Moore's, which is no longer in business, Roseland, which is still in business but no longer offers mail-order services, and Roses Unlimited. Most of the ones that don't do well and the ones that died very quickly came from Vintage Gardens, Rogue Valley Roses, Northland Rosarium, and Sequoia, which is no longer in business. I do have vigorous and lovely own-root floribundas, shrubs, climbers, and OGR's from the latter four nurseries.

personally I love own root as I don't have to worry about Dr. Huey taking over. But I can't really say a heck of a lot because most of my roses, budded & OR, die to the ground each winter. I prefer to buy own root whenever I can, but that's just me.
