When I open a thread that I'm watching with new replies, it's dropping clear to the end. Not even giving me the option to click on "First Unread"

Doing it on threads that I've never looked at before also.

???? Shrug!

This is a preference option. Go to your profile, then click on site preferences. You'll then see the option to disable that auto-jump to new feature. (Save your changes after you change it on that page.)

I have been wondering something similar but wan't sure how to word the question.
(Still not sure this will even make sense; it's been a really long day.)
I have my preference set at 'yes' for "Automatically jump to the first unread post in threads?"

The site randomly selects either 'Jump to End' or 'First Unread' without any further input from me.

Why does the site do 'jump to end' sometimes and other times 'first unread'? I have checked this with threads I am following and with threads that are new to me. Thank You!

It's not random.

When you enter a thread it takes you straight to the first unread post. If there are no new unread posts (i.e. you have already seen them all) it takes you to the end.

What was weird on my end as it used to do exactly as you described Dave....then it started just going right to the end of the threads. I don't remember changing anything in my profile but I did what you suggested and that seems to have fixed the problem. So maybe I did inadvertently change it. Shrug!

Well I'm still getting "Jump to End" instead of "First Unread" and Rick your post is an example. When I saw there was a new post I opened it and it had the "Jump to End".
So I opened ATP in another tab, and there was a new post in "Want to make a Bog Garden", but that one had the First Unread". Both threads only had one new post.
Whats weird is it wasn't doing that before. So when Dave suggested it was in my settings I thought ok, but I'm sure I didn't change anything. Only time it's aggravating is when there are a lot of new posts and instead of getting the "First Unread", it gives me the "Jump to end" and I have to scroll back up to find the posts that I haven't read yet.

That might happen if you double click on the link to read the new thread. If you do that, then it registers the first click as a view and that erases where you were before. So be sure you're clicking only once.

RickCorey said:I've never had my "jump to first unread post" jump strangely, but I've never been able to figure out why some forums (especially Farming) show unread posts in the ATP Home page, despite there being no recent unread posts as shown by the order of the threads in the forum.

Rick, I'm not entirely sure this is what you are talking about, but since that has never stopped me from jumping in before...

when I get a message about "updated threads" (the ones I've replied to or am otherwise watching) and go through those threads, and then go back and look at the forums list, threads show up as "new" that were included in the "updated threads." In other words, they don't get recognized as being seen when you go through the updated threads and are still there in the forums list. Or something. Blinking

Thanks, Sandy. Elsewhere, Trish just explained that :

>> "The thread watcher and the forum "yes/no" don't communicate with each other very well. We've always and forever had this "feature" (can't really call it a bug)."

>> "There aren't any new threads because you looked at the only new thread via your thread watcher. The forum doesnt know that you already looked at just the thread because you didn't visit the forum main page."

The thread ""New"?" in Site Talk forum

I THINK you're both explaining the same thing. Thanks again.

Interestingly enough, this thread still says "Jump to end", instead of "First unread"...even with clicking just One time on the thread.
Oh well...........

mj,

I checked the logs and your browser is sending two requests to visit the thread. This indicates a possible double-click on your part. Are you sure you're not clicking on the link twice?

You visited the thread at 2:47:09 (9 seconds after the minute) and again at 2:47:10 (1 second later). The first hit would have told the server you've seen the thread and then on the second hit, the server thinks you've seen all the posts and thus there is nothing new for you.

Dave,
I purposely made sure I didn't double click. When I saw that there was a response to the thread I clicked one time on the thread, then when it came up on the right it said Jump to end. I clicked one time on that. It doesn't happen on every thread.

I did have to mark this one as "Unread" a little bit ago, and come back to it so I expected to see the Jump to end then.

It's not that big a deal, I was just curious, especially as sometimes I get pretty far behind on some threads, and instead of taking me to first unread it was giving me the jump to end then I had to scroll back up to figure out where I had left off.

You have better/more important things to do than worry about this.

Nevertheless, I will investigate further into this and see if I can replicate the behavior for myself (if so, I'll be able to fix it in a real hurry.)

For what it's worth, I have noticed the same thing: jumping to the last post of a thread I've not looked at before, instead of going to the first post. But it doesn't happen all the time!

I haven't done this in a while (winXP???) so I don't remember if this was a mouse or windows setting (do you even use a mouse?) whereby a single click became a double click. Possibility? Shrug!

It doesn't do it for every thread. Does it for this one, but when I go to the thread in the Orchids forum " Our Orchid blooms in August 2014" it shows me "First Unread".

I have Windows 7, use a mouse, but I'm being particularly careful not to double click.

My mouse sometimes does double clicks in spite of my best efforts to limit the clicks to one. My desk is probably too dusty (or too littered with tobacco). Big Grin

Well, my mouse is as old and decrepit as I am. It does NOT like to double click, so half the time I have to right click and select open instead of double clicking. So I'm pretty sure that's not what's happening when I end up at the bottom of a new thread. Hilarious!
