The only thing with that is ... what I consider a weed may be a welcome garden plant by someone in another part of the country and vice versa.

The All Things Gardening Forum: http://garden.org/forums/view/... may be the place to discuss invasive plants ... what may be considered a non-native invasive in one part of the country may not be invasive in another area.

You could use the ID forum to ask the members to help you identify your 'weed'. Then you can make the decision whether to keep it or eradicate it.

I agree with plantladylin - All Things Gardening Forum; perhaps you can start a thread there to talk about your weeds?

We sometimes forget that we have members in several countries, not just in the USA so the term 'weed' is subjective. While people in the US are busy trying to kill a plant others in Europe or Asia may consider that same plant a delicacy.

Even within the continental US, what is considered a weed in California may be quite desirable in Michigan and visa-versi. Over the years, I have grown many "weeds" which have been absolutely delightful and well-behaved in my garden. It is amazing what a change of zone can do Smiling

Yes, they do. I've introduce a few to my garden for that reason. I figured if I had to have weeds, I might as well like them.

Many of the so-called weeds have medicinal properties and food value.
I don't encourage any aggressive plants but some weeds do have their place in my garden.

I see several plants in the photo but the purple color blooms may be Veronia gigantea???

Edited because I had 'Veronica' plants on the brain and had spelled it incorrectly.

I tried to get a better pic of the bloom. I think it does resemble some of the knapweed pics that came up when I googled it.

>> To discuss garden weeds and/or invasive plants.

The "Pests and Diseases" forum ought to welcome weed threads.

"Here you can find pictures to help you identify
who or what is damaging your garden
and information on how to control it."

http://garden.org/forums/view/...

I always love a thread where one group of people are wailing and moaning about "How can we KILL this #$%##^### thing??!!!??"

and another group is complaining

"Whaddaya mean, kill it, we've been trying everything under the Sun to get it to grow for once!"

Unfortunately, the solution to both questions is "MOVE!"

I suggested it for multiple reasons:

1. General talk about weedy/invasive plants.
2. How to deal with weeds and best methods to eradicate them.
3. Talk about weed/invasive plants we purposely grow ( worldwide)
4. To I'd weedy plants as most never reach blooming so plant id board people might have hard time id the plant.
5. Uses of weedy/ invasive plants, such as herbal use, gardens, and various cultivars of some.

Whether or not its invasive or not shouldn't matter, but being members are worldwide its safe to assume its in someone's yard Smiling

I photograph most of the weeds I find. Many of the Universities have weed ID online & smartphone apps.

After research, I record the info in my plant database (Google Spreadsheet).

Sometimes I remember the name of the weed for a few days:)

I would support a weed forum.

And encourage members to submit weed photos to the ATP plant database.

A few weeks ago after a morning of weed killing, I finally stopped to look up the name of a most prevalent weed.

"Chamaesyce maculata 2014, Spotted Spurge, Small spotted sandmat, cam ee sigh see mak-yuh-LAH-tuh, Prostrate Annual Weed,HA, Spot in middle of leaf, W1

A prostrate summer annual that forms dense mats up to 16 inches (or more) in diameter. All parts of the plant emit a milky sap (irritant to some) when broken. Spotted spurge is found in the eastern half of the U.S. plus California and Oregon. However, some maps show it throughout the U.S. and parts of Canada. Abundant in SE Michigan for sure. aka Euphorbia maculata."
