My local club, North Alabama Daylily Society, is having a meeting this Sunday in the Boeing Room of the Huntsville Botanical Garden.

Nicole (Harry) DeVito, noted hybridizer from Eustis, Florida will be the speaker for our meeting at 2:00 pm.

Should be a great meeting. She is bringing auction plants on which all attendees will be able to bid (even if you are not a member of the club)

List of the plants:

It is a nice list. Many speakers will bring auction plants to club meetings. Often they are recent introductions of the speaker. I believe standard practice is to split the amount raised between the speaker and the club (I could be mistaken about that though.)

Most of the time the plants sell for less than the list price so it is a great deal for us.

If you ever get a chance to go to any of the AHS regional meetings or the National meeting, there are plants offered there as well: a silent auction of plants donated by member clubs and a table sale. The club that hosts the meeting will often have raffles that include plants.

For example NADS, my club, is in region 14 and we hosted the Summer Region 14 meeting here in Huntsville this June. There were several big collections that were single raffle items. Our club was extra fortunate, we were able to get Larry Grace as the speaker AND he and his wife donated not one, but two entire 2014 collections for the raffle. Also raffled off were the entire 2014 collections of introductions from Fred Manning, Josh Jaques, and Jim & Martha Brazelton (daughter of Richard Webster), in addition to selected intros of the Salters, and the Trimmers.

I was extremely fortunate and won one of the other raffle items: 5 plants from Karol Emmerich's 2012 Intros donated by club member Willie Marcus: Vanishing Mist, Skin of My Teeth, Stranger in a Strange Land, Crown of Splendor and Chariot of Clouds

What a great selection of plants you get to bid on! Hurray! Hurray! Hurray!

I'm so far away from club meetings (70 miles or 90 miles depending on which one) that attending is a problem.

I'm thinking about organizing a daylily club in Ocala, Florida beginning January 2015 unless someone jumps in and does it before I can.

Thanks for this thread!! Pat, if you should decide to form a new club and want some help from AHS, our Educational Outreach Chair Nan Ripley has created a packet for just this purpose that might help you. You can contact Nan at this email: [email protected]

Nice plant offerings Laura. Hurray!
Wish I could be there.

I love Lovey dubby being a member of my local club, Greater Cincinnati Daylily and Hosta Society (GCDHS). This Saturday we are returning Charles & Heidi Douglas plants we have been growing for the past two years to be auctioned

We also have our annual plant exchange. Everyone brings whatever they have to share and we set it all out for viewing ( there have been trees, shrubs, ground covers, coneflowers, herbs, tropicals, iris, hostas and of corse daylilies). Then each person gets a random color card (from 5 colors ) When your color is called, you go up and choose a plant. This continues for 3-5 rounds then what is left is a free for all. We end the meeting with a pot luck as everyone brings one dish, side or desert. It is one of our most popular meetings and we have many people who join our club just for this meeting.
Love what you teach and teach what you love!

Sounds like fun. I will have to see if my club would be interested in something like that.

One of the many advantages of having a local club is that you have a source of local people that can tell you what they grow, what does well for them Thumbs up and what does not. Thumbs down

You can visit each others gardens to see what everyone has done and get ideas.
These are from the tour gardens for the Region 14 Meeting

I will add that Nicole (Harry) DeVito will be the guest speaker this Saturday, August 9 for the Tennessee Valley Daylily Society that meets in Hixson, TN which is very close to Chattanooga, TN. Anyone close by should check out this meeting. Nicole is a great speaker and will be bringing some of her intros. to auction as well. Probably some of the same as she is bringing to the Huntsville, AL meeting. For more information, go to the TVDS website. http://tennesseevalleydaylilys... At this time we are planning to attend. It is a little more than an hour's drive for us.

I wish I lived closer! I am a member of the Middle TN Daylily Society but rarely get to attend. I live over 2 hrs away. I am still hoping to start a club in Bowling Green, KY We are planning on another meeting next Spring. It is fun to meet others that have the same interest as you do. I also enjoy touring others gardens.
It inspires me to improve, lol and weed!

Does it work for Internationals? I would love to be there.

The best thing for me about being involved in daylily clubs is the people you meet along the way and really get to know them. Sites like this are great but you never really know what a person is like until you shake there hand for the first time.

I have only been to my club a couple of times. It is an hours drive from me and you have to drive through Detroit to get there and I really don't like driving in Detroit after dark. It's not safe.
