The Chlorophytum comosum 'Ocean' is the plant I would like you to talk to me about. First of all, I purchased the 'Ocean' from a well respected plant business, hoping I would get the correct plant, rather than buy from one of the internet stores. I want to propagate and sell it so I want to be sure I had the right plant. This is what I thought was the authentic 'ocean' and what I had ordered

This is what I got...

What do you think? I want to contact the company and ask them since they advertise it as NEW Ocean Spider..., maybe someone in shipping sent me the wrong plant. The plants I got are not marked Ocean either. Just marked chlorophytum spider plant. Please tell me if you think I got what I ordered. I have never had this happen before with this company but I want more than my one eye opinion before I tell them. Thank you.

Doesn't appear so. Ocean has striped edges according to that site. ??

Exactly....that was my observation...I am sure the shipping dept. made an error. Thanks for your comment. I just wanted someone other than me to verify what I thought I was seeing.

I am not sure I understand the question......you mean what do I do with my plants? If that is what you mean, I propagate and sell them as starter plants on eBay and ETsy and Cubits...I never buy a plant to propagate unless I am absolutely sure it is the real thing...I do not want to mislead any of my customers.

I emailed the company and sent them a picture of what I got and what I ordered. Their customer service was closed but the owner returned my email and the plants I ordered will be shipped tomorrow. It was a shipping error and once again, it pays to check your orders immediately and get back to the people in a respectful fashion. We all make mistakes and if you know your vendors, most of them will bend over backwards to correct errors. I offered to keep the others, which I do not need, but he has not told me if he is charging me for these or not. I will cross that bridge when I come to it. I doubt there will be a charge of any kind since it was their error.

I'm glad to hear this is working out so well. I hate it when vendors won't right their wrongs. We all have spent lots of $ on plants and have quite an investment in time and energy as well.

JB: I agree, the plant you received looks like the common Chlorophytum comosum. The variety sold with the cultivar name of 'Ocean' looks to me like Spider Plant (Chlorophytum comosum 'Variegatum') but maybe there are slight differences. I know sometimes nurseries/sellers have different names for the same plant. I'm so glad the seller is willing to send you the plants you actually ordered, that's what I call good customer service!

Lin, you are correct, the Ocean is very much like the Chlorophytum comosum 'variegatum' in many respects; it has shorter broader leaves and the margins are much more white than yellow. The funny thing was, I had ordered several plants and did not remember which I ordered, so when I first unpacked them, it did not dawn on me I may have received the wrong plants until I went to put them on my inventory and repot them. That is when the Lights went on in my old head. Sometimes I wonder about me. They were very nice about it and I should be receiving the correct ones today. There was no question when I sent them the pictures. Love the email.

Would it be safe to call the one attached in the photo: Spider Plant (Chlorophytum comosum 'Variegatum'? It's really a family heirloom plant, so I have no idea how many decades back it origins reach, but easily 3-4 decades, so it's not a new variety. These are the offsets I stuck in an unused flowerbed when I re-potted the mother plant(s), but they have better color and were easier to photograph.

@Donald, from what I can see I would say it is a 'Variegatum'. Look on JB's Plant List and I have just added several other varieties of spider plants. There is one called 'Ocean' that has similar markings but the leaves are much wider than the 'Variegatum'. Hope this helps.

Looks like Spider Plant (Chlorophytum comosum 'Variegatum') to me also ... one that has been around a long time.

Thanks JB and Lin. Considering how long this one has been around, I'd guess 'Variegatum'. The others with white/yellow edges are likely newer varieties, I'm thinking?

According to a friend of mine, Chlorophytum comosum 'Ocean' has been around since it was released by the Dutch in 2004. I feel sure you have the 'Variegatum' .
