We eat perilla in salads and plant it in gardens for its lovely color. Ours grow as tall as we let them.

@plantladylin, I never thought to measure the height of my Perilla. Today mine was almost 5 feet tall, competing for sunlight with the nearby Chia and tomatoes. In the other bed it's just under 3 feet tall. (These are the red ones.)

Mine has not topped out yet , but it usually gets between 3-4 feet.
I love the color now but it tends to change when it starts to bloom, less deep.

..a balanced life is worth pursuit.

@greene I'm not surprised at your plant attaining a height of 5' ... being in the south where plants sometimes seem to have a mind of their own.

This next bit has nothing to do with the plant in question.
I recall the first time I visited Florida. I saw a Poinsettia. It wasn't in a pot and it wasn't Christmas.
This beauty was growing in a private garden, and was over 5 feet tall. I was amazed at how different things could be from 'back home'.
