Not Your Average Gardening Tools

By Xeramtheum

I have a tendency to look at pretty much every sort of tool as a possible garden tool. Over the years I've tried out just about everything, but I have whittled it down to about 9 tools I use consistently.

Just yesterday I was potting up some cuttings out of 2in. cells and the dinner fork did an awesome job of digging them out without disrupting the root ball or destroying the container. If they're root-bound, sometimes two dinner forks are needed.

Chop sticks are cheap and very handy for the 'tweezer' jobs that you don't quite have long enough tweezers for. I use them a lot for re-potting orchids, to pick out old hunks of broken down medium from amongst the roots.

My favorite, though, is the serrated bread knife which does a fabulous job of pruning the groundcover along the edges of the walkway. I have a whole set of 6 wicked serrated "steak knives" from the dollar store, stuck in pots all around the yard for pruning, weeding, transplanting and digging small holes.

I tip my hat to you. I agree
I see I'm not the only one with bread knives stuck in pots around my yard. Hilarious! Also great for cutting apart hosta.

Bread knives are also great for edging. I take two sticks, tie a long string to each one, push the sticks into the ground and create my edge. With the bread knife I can cut right along the sting edge and then go back to remove the grass or weeds loosened by the knife and straighten it up.

I use dinner forks all the time. The inexpensive ones with the thin tines work best for me and I keep several outside.
It’s okay to not know all the answers.

I get my "tools" from thrift stores. One of my favorites is definitely a large serrated knife, which is perfect for dividing plants. If the plant is pot bound and needs up-potting I just get it out of the pot and slice in half with the knife. Kitchen tongs (again from a thrift store) are perfect for handling prickly plants.
