I have my supplies to make 2 4x4 barn quilts. I am using implement paint. One lady seals hers and another one doesn't. What would you suggest?

Oops. Looks like I'll have to rephrase that. I HAD a bunch of craft paint. Huh. Wonder where they got away to. Oh well, at least I know where the brushes are.

I have only used the paint pens on the rocks so I do not know how other paints work.

But I do use outside paint on a couple of my outdoor ornaments because I leave them out in the winter. After I paint I seal them with Polyurethane. I get a small can at Lowes for a couple of dollars and it last years.

If you use other paints I think the little artist paint brushes at the dollar store would probably have a fine enough tip to write on the stones.

The other suggestion I would offer is I pick up the little test paint at Lowes and HD for 2.00 you can get every color in the rainbow cheap and seal with polyurethane.

Oh, I didn't know they had those test paint thingies at Lowes and HD! Our hardware store used to carry them, but discontinued them recently. Great! I'll look for them. Thanks for the suggestion!

I don't understand your question. Maybe I need more java! Yeah, that's it. What is implement paint? In all my years painting, I have never heard of that. If you are talking about painting directly on barns, I would seal it.

Implement paint is for tractors/machinery. I have John Deere green and yellow and International Harvester red for my quilt. I will be painting this onto a commercial grade sheet of sign board made for the outdoors.

Only problem with those implement paints is that those manufacturer's names on the cans just about double the price! (Particularly John Deere)

Funny thing about those implement paint colors. I remember from my misspent younger days when I hung out with car crazy lowriders, International Red was a hot car color. DH tells me that yep, International Red was indeed International Harvester Red, the implement paint. And we do have a can of it in the barn for our International Harvester tractor!

Sort of a farm. 20 acres of grass, alfalfa, ponies and a friend's sheep. And of course, our doggies. We used to raise goats, but it got to be too much for us to manage recently. Sigh. Encroaching age. Heh, I have a very checkered past.

Teresa, the implement paint doesn't have to be sealed. It's not sealed when used on tractors or vehicles and stays on for years. It will probably outlast the signboard.

Natural rocks are so porous they hold just about any kind of paint for several years without sealing. All the seal does is make it adhere to a surface better. But if it's patio paint, like Boo mentioned, and if the surface is fairly porous, the patio paint doesn't need a seal either unless it makes you more comfortable to use it. An outdoor type seal won't hurt anything, and might make it last a year or two longer.

I am hoping to get this project started soon now that it may cool up.

I can't wait to see pictures of it. If I had a barn or any kind of outbuilding, I'd paint a quilt square on it too. I love that they are on all the buildings in my home town, but they are small squares, maybe 2'x2', and are even on the downtown shops and businesses. All the same size and every pattern you could imagine. So beautiful.

I am starting small. Mine will be a 4 x4. Because I grow so many daylilies, I have chosen the Carolina Lily for my place.

I love quilts and painted on on my living room wall when I was much much younger. I should do it again or find a gigantic canvas at a yard sale and do that.
