Doris................do you have any brugs left? I have Inspiration rooting for you.

I know it has been cold here but you all, up your way, take it to another dimension. I am ready to start posting summer brug photos to help chase away the winter doldrums.

I am reading all of y'all's posts on your Brugs and drooling. Inspiration sounds simply wonderful. Now just how do y'all cross these and get new kinds? At the risk of sounding dumb, which I am when it comes to stuff like this. I just buy stuff or root one.

Donna..............crossing them is a process that is described in several articles...............BGI is a good source of information. I started crossing brugs as soon as I had two varieties to cross to each other, back in 2007. My success varied but now I have seedlings that are worth registering! You said it.................you have no idea what you are going to get!

Wow, this is all new to me. Fascinating, I'm sure. I really didn't know they made seed, never noticed seed pods, but mine always bloom just about frost time, so they never have a chance here in our area to set seed anyway. The frost usually takes care if that.

Donna ,crossing these plants isn't rocket science. In fact it's so easy that now we have hundreds of registered cultivars. Just be sure you have two different varieties and transfer the pollen from one to the other. For the most part these are self infertile. Pollen transfer is easy with something like a "Q" tip or small brush. It's the long wait for the seed pod to mature that kills you.

And Ginger, I am sure hoping for some nice crosses with Inspiration. And of course, with Day Dreams.

Donna, there is nothing like looking for a tag on a seedling and it has gone missing. We go way beyond record keeping.............and yes, after success with the pollen...............you wait. So, missing tags are a big no-no after you spend so much time raising the seeds.....I mark the trunk, add a tag in the pot and a slip on tag around a branch. But is was a sad lesson to learn over the years.
Now, are you going to try your hand at it??? Hurray!

kareoke said:Rhapsody Glad to see you got yours inside, it has been bitter cold here, -8 with -14 wind chill today it looks OK but then you find all is covered in ice, schools are all closed.
I think next spring I will want to get more Brugs, I really miss them.

Kareoke~ You know I am in zone 10B... it is hot here. If in the spring your children will help you out with your next brug collection, I would be happy to help you out with that since you took such good care of me when I first started!
