Dear all, we are very lucky to have someone who sends us beautiful pictures of the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew, or Kew Gardens, as everybody calls it. So to wake up this morning to a fantastic selection of photos of the spring flowers is such a fantastic treat!
Please do not miss out on the Daffodils as far as you can see, and many more incredible shrubs and Hellebore's, amazing!
If someone is kind enough to send us all these wonderful things, let us at least look at them and thank the Gentleman involved!
To get to see them them click on the Kew gardens Thread, in British Gardens!

Regards.
Neil.

These are not spectacular, or different ,BUT they are the first hint of spring even though yesterday we had an inch of snow, and the grass is slowly turning green.

Many years ago whilst working in West Sussex, the Lady garden owner had this magnificent very old tree outside her house. It was growing on a south facing slope, in a chalk and stone soil, Its spring leaves and autumn\fall colour were stunning, but its incredible red and pink bark was stunning in the winter. The public you to stop and stare at it in awe especially if their was a bit of snow on the ground. To the visitors disbelief when they asked what it was, it was an Acer! I have always loved them and it took me years to get one. Yesterday my ones leaves started to come out, it is of course the Coral Bark Maple, Acer palmatum 'Senkaki'. This remarkable shrub\tree starts with the new growth being a Coral pink in the winter and spring, the leaves are yellow to orange in the spring, then turn green and finally in the autumn\fall go to a pink then to a yellow. All this from the spring to the autumn\fall. The new growth that was pink turns a deeper red, and the new bark is Coral pink. What more could you want, may I ask? My one was quite small when I got it and it is now doing well, it and my Acer griseum look magnificent in the garden. The paperbark is grown alone as the bark is the most special feature, but the Coral Bark has pride of place amongst my wife's collection of Acer's. I have four Acer's in the garden apart from the other mentioned ones I have; Acer davidii and a lovely Acer davidii 'Rosalie'. They are all spectacular and mixed or on their own give me all year round pleasure! My wife has untold Acer's in her Acer glade and keeps adding to them, when I am not looking.
Regards.
Neil.

Petalplants, what is that in your first picture on April 2nd? It looks much like a columbine. Neil, Tony's mother used to go into the forest and dig up primroses to plant in her gardens, what a fantastic luxury! I wish I had that option, though I have found lovely moss nearby that I am digging up for ground cover in our shade garden.

Dear Brenda, if you get caught digging up any wild plant nowadays you can lose your House as the fine is so large! I have seen someone stealing Orchids from the wild, he lost his car and his house, then his wife. Plus 5 years in prison!
Not recommended and rightly so.

Ah, well, Tony is quick on the response... the land was owned by Sir Walter Wiggham, and Tony's Grandfather was his gamekeeper, so it was allowed. She used to dig up bluebells, primrose, and crocus. She was also allowed to harvest blackberries, mushrooms, and chestnuts!

Dear Brenda was this before the Wildlife & Countryside Act 1985 and as amended! You are allowed to pick fruit and certain plants, Bluebells are protected by law now, nobody can touch them Class 5 plant!

Brenda, You are right about that first plant pic.--- it's a Columbine. I had actually just bought it about 2 weeks before at a nursery; most Columbines don't grow down here, because of the heat. I hope this may be one type that will, because I love their petals, and this one's color. I'm not sure Where to plant it ...I need to decide soon!
