Well I planted a lot of my red cabbage last night after cutting down all my amaranth. Went and looked at my kale and yet again something ate it so now I'll be on the hunt for some kale plants. I'm determined to have brussel sprouts and kale this fall!

We have taken everything out of the garden except for the row of Sun Sugar yellow cherry tomatoes. I have never seen anything produce like these do and they still taste pretty good. There are hundreds of them on those few plants, so I suppose i will have to freeze them. I hate to see that sort of thing go to waste.
The Daylily gardens are all cleaned up and the leaves are going in. I still can't dig out the Blackberry Lilies as the seeds are still not mature, and I want to save as many as possible this year.

SCurtis. When you dry them,do you skin them or cut them in half first? How do you use them once they are dried? They must be hard to find, lol, as they must be really little!! I love doing all that sort of thing. I skin my cherry tomatoes and then freeze in cartons to add to pasta and casseroles.

It's really not that much work, Sandy. I drop them in a pot of really hot water for just a minute, and then I lift them out with a strainer spoon to a big plate. They pop right out of skins and I put them in pint freezer containers. I can do a whole cake pan full in just minutes.

Eek cookies still! I freeze them whole first put them on a baking sheet till frozen then transfer to a vacuum seal bag. For dehydrating I cut them in half then but them on the dehydrator, I use them in salads and pasta salads during the winter normally with some sprouts! I also vacuum seal them after they are dried sometimes I put some in oil as well Smiling

I'm talking to the stragglers in my garden every day...whispering the *S* word....telling them that if they know what's good for them they'll hurry up and GET RIPE....otherwise it's the Compost Pile... Thumbs down

I did manage a few quarts of roasted tomatoes...and a neighbor made some tasty Mole sauce with some Holy Moly peppers I gave her. I can't decide what date to pull the plug on the garden - our first frost date is around 10/15...

Happy Birthday Dr. D!

We have some really cold weather predicted for this Saturday, so I'm thinking there's not much time left for the garden here. I still have tomato blossoms since we had a really nice warm week. I need to dig my irish potatoes, and harvest the winter squash and pumpkins. I baked a squash last night for dinner with butter and brown sugar. Sticking tongue out I have a lot of tomatoes yet, but don't think I am going to have time to can anymore. I might try drying some. Do you skin them to dry them?

I only dry Roma's, Tom, and those I leave the skin on. I have started to bake and freeze squash now and they seem really good this year. I hope to bring a bunch back from wisc as I don't grow my own. We just don't have the space here, and pumpkins and squash don't do well for some reason.

What kind of potatoes are everyone's favorite for baking???

I FINALLY had enough ripe tomatoes piled up to make 14 pints of salsa yesterday -- and to roast 2 big pans of Viva Italia and 4th of July tomatoes today. There may still be hope for making some juice... Smiling

Hurray for you! Hurray! I wish you could come and get some of mine. I think I may just put some whole in the food processer and process it, then freeze it. I hate to see them going to waste.

Tom, if I lived near you and you always had so many tomatoes I doubt I would even bother to grow them!! Smiling

We brought in a bunch more today that were starting to show some color, supposed to be rainy for a few days -- and pretty chilly -- so it seemed like a good idea!! Except for the fact that now I have multiple large bowls of tomatoes sitting around... a recipe for a "fruit fly party" ! Blinking
