I'm curious about the 'Hawaiian' Spider Plant. When it produces babies, how long before the babies begin their characteristic leaf color change (go from white and green to green)? I've read somewhere that it takes "maturity" in the plant before its leaves begin to change, but I only read that one place and I don't know its validity.

What are your experiences (those who've grown/currently grow 'Hawaiian')? Does it matter if the baby is still attached to the 'Mama' or removed and potted on its own (does one turn green faster over the other)?

I am sorry to be so tardy in replying to this thread, but I am in my busy time with starter plants and the season for the Christmas Trees Farm is getting into high gear since we open the day after Thanksgiving. To top it all off, my computer decided to not function properly and after about four days and a two hour visit from the technician, I am back in business. Thank God.

Now to talk about the Hawaiian or as it is also known as 'Golden Glow'. I am relatively new at propagating these because I found it difficult to find the plants that were actually Hawaiian. I do not have a time line for these plants. They do their own little thing and when it happens I seldom write it down. However, the plantlets look like this when removed and put in water to root, look like this:
The variegated part is on the creamy white side with some turning to champagne color.


This is a rooted plantlet that was planted 8/28/2014.


This is a young stock plant with her first plantlet (which should be removed now) and a second shoot showing signs of more plantlets coming.


As they mature in pots they eventually will turn green with a faint champagne stripe in the center that may or may not fade also. If the plantlets are left on the plants they too will turn green. This plant has many different combinations going on throughout its lifetime. I am sorry to be so vague with a 'time line' on it but seems I just never wrote any or that down. I have sent your post to a friend who has been raising Hawaiians for awhile and when he responds I will sent you his answer.

It is a little difficult to see the first picture (I think I see a white and green leaf). Have you ever had a 'Hawaiian' start out with nothing but white and green leaves and eventually turn all green? I have what I know to be a 'Hawaiian,' and one that is in question. I am not sure if it just hasn't "matured" yet, or if I have something else entirely. You could say this little plant spurred my initial question.

Here is the response to your question from my friend. Busy man of few words.

You do see some white and cream (champagne ) in the first picture. They were new plantlets I got from someone who I trust knows what they have. Do you notice how green the plantlet is on the stock plant? It is on there longer than usual but I just neglected to remove it. I really must because I can use more stocks and this is a healthy half mature one already.

I am so reluctant to buy from just anyone anymore when it comes to the spiders. I wanted the 'Ocean' spider and Hirt had it up on eBay. When it arrived it was with some other plants and I did not pay attention to the order because I was busy doing something else and did open it to let them rest and breathe but did not unpack them where I could check the contents. When I did, I realized Hirt had not sent me the plant they advertised in fact it was the' vittatum' which I have dozens of and do not need anymore, but I told them there was an error in shipping and they said they would re-send the order. It arrived days later....same thing. Vittatum' NOT 'Ocean' I then told them if they can not send the 'Ocean' to cancel the order and take down the listing on eBay and Amazon. I got a full refund and now have four more Vittatum plants I do not really want. I refused to return them unless Hirt paid the shipping since I do not really want them and it was not my fault. I am not sure if they are just being stupid in the shipping dept. or do they not know the difference. The 'Ocean' looks like the Variegatum (or reverse variegated as some call it), It hasa whie margined green leaves and the leaves are shorter and broader then others They tend to have brighter white margins with less yellow/cream coloration. It does not flower as well as the Variegatum. The lesson I learned is to unpack them immediately and be sure you got the one you ordered. I was able to get a real 'ocean' from another source later and they are beautiful little plants.

If you decide to continue your collection of spiders, let me know and maybe I can help you find what you are looking for. There is so much on ebay but again, unless you know who you are getting from you can be wasting your money.

I do not know why the colors are so pale in the pictures because the plants are a deep green. I took them with my camera and usually they are perfect. Not sure if it was the way the light was shining on them or not. I will try again when I have time.

That considering, my one in question is still rather small compared to my 'Hawaiian' I purchased. I guess I'll just have to be patient (*snaps fingers*) and see what it does once it gets bigger. It was purchased labeled as a variegated 'Spider Plant,' but I noticed the 'Mama' looked like a 'Hawaiian,' so I thought what the heck, I don't have any other 'Spider Plants' (at the time I didn't), so I'll end up with a cultivar I don't have either way. I will let you know down the road what it ends up doing. I know my indoor conditions are different than someone else's and it'd probably grow faster outdoors, so thst could be having an effect on it's growth rate.

I picked up the 'Hawaiian' last week, I finally stopped talking myself out of it. Not being sure if the smaller one is the same cultivar, I didn't want to end up with two, but the thought that what if it isn't a 'Hawaiian' (the smaller one), I don't know how long it'll be before I find another one. This is one of a couple that I've found in town this hear. 'Hawaiian' Spider Plants seem less common here.

I'm sorry to hear you had such issues with Hirt's. I am afraid of ordering online as it is, but I have read some people who have received plants from them developed mealybug infestations (maybe things have changed since then, I've never ordered from them personally). Perhaps you will find a friend that will take them off your hands, or another purpose for them. That is the gamle with ordering online, sadly.

I have not seen an 'Ocean' before. 'Viattum' is a rarity here, I've seen one in five years or so. My Mother-in-law had one in a plant arrangement. She ended up with several, but left them outside in the winter and they didn't return. I hope you are able to get an 'Ocean' soon, if you have not already.

It will be some time before I expand my collection, but I will let you know once I have the room to do so. They are such forgiving plants, it would be nice to have more!

You're fine. I can't say that I noticed any typos in your posts. Then again, I woke up tired and wasn't fully awake yet. This has been a tiring week and I'm still not caught up on my sleep.

I'm not one to nit pick though. I type on a mobile device, so my posts come out with typos sometimes too. Or worse, one day I didn't proof-read my post and I told someone that their plant looked like a Sedum when I meant to say Kalanchoe (how in the world...). I had to go back later and re-state myself as that poor person was probably all sorts of confused.
