This time of the year, I feel like a squirrel gathering her nuts for the winter. Something in the air just tells me it's time to start taking coleus cuttings. I like to take at least 3 of each that I want to grow again next year. This year I'm using 3 or 4 inch pots for most of them.
I've found they do best for me if I start them in pots outdoors and let them develop good root systems before taking them inside.

You'd think I have enough, but this morning I walked over to a neighbor's to take her some iris and came home with a big handful of her coleus cuttings. Have a few I haven't been able to name yet. Maybe one of you will recognize them.

I think this is probably Limon Blush.

This one looks like it would be easy to ID, but I looked through the database and also visited Rosy Dawn and can't seem to find it.

This one has just a few splashes of purple. Any ideas?

Here is a photo of my indoor set up last winter. I have more tender succulents this year, so am going to use a plant light on them and will have the whole 4 level stand plus another small stand for the coleus. The window faces southwest, so gets enough light even in the winter to keep them going.

I'm starting to think about that too. The plants are so beautiful this time of year, hate to think they will just be mush soon.

I've taken many cuttings (3 to a pot and 4" pots) but will likely take many more.

The photo with two cuttings - top right might be Elfers. I don't know the others.

The two cuttings in the top photo are both from the same plant. I thought of Elfers too. Grew it last year, but for some reason it didn't make it through the winter. This one seem lighter in color.

Sorry, I can't identify any of them then. I love all the colors that show up in coleus even though they change over winter.

Going to get down to 38 degrees tonight. BRRR! Brought all the cuttings inside. Plant to set up my plant stands tomorrow, but for now they are sitting in the living room. Hopefully it will warm up again and they will be able to live outside for at least a few more weeks. Not going to cover the coleus outside. Will just hope they make it. Was down in the low 40's last night.

Wish someone would send me a little more motivation. I have daylilies soaking all over waiting for me to plant them. Did end up losing a couple Chartreuse coleus, they must be more tender than the other ones. This week looks pretty nice. Down to 44 a couple nights, but the coleus can take that.

52 here now. No idea what it was at 6 AM when you were up, Allison!

Many coleus will come inside today. Glad I got them ready yesterday.

I'm rolling over at 5:30, Allison!

Yesterday I brought in quite a few pots of coleuses so I guess this is the sure signal that fall is fast approaching.

LMBO, Arlene! I'm getting ready to be ready for that too! Happens a little later down here, but it IS coming.

I could wait but it's an "iffy" day here and this will be our only rainy day for another week so it's one quick escape from the pot ghetto, where the coleuses have been, if it does rain. It's just sad that it's the end of summer already. We gardeners always look forward to spring and summer so acknowledging that only the fall blooms, leaves and color remain is a reminder that winter is on the way.
