Well, the reason I asked ....

I could only find the alfalfa cubes at Tractor Supply. So what I do is put them in nylon footies and soak them in a 5 gallon bucket of water to use as a liquid tea for my daylilies. I do this twice with the cubes until they expand really nice. I then pull the soaked alfalfa footies out and lay them on a piece of wood to dry. After they are dry, I sprinkle the dried and fluffy alfalfa around the daylilies and other garden beds. This past time I did it, something got into the footies and tore them up and pulled out some of the alfalfa. I don't know what the critters were after unless it was the bugs that had buried into the alfalfa right after I removed them from the water bucket. I used 3 footies. Two of the 3 were torn up. One was not. I have no idea what critter did that.

As far as wildlife coming into my yard. I get all kinds of wildlife. The dropped bird seeds were part of the problem until I came up with a solution. I cut up an old tarp that is laid down underneath the bird feeder like a skirt. At the end of each day, I fold the tarp in half and then roll it up. I then dump all the sunflower shells and any left over seeds out into the woods right next to my yard. The seed shells decompose and enrich the sandy soil. Any edible seeds left among the shells are found outside my fenced in yard. So the critters have no reason to be in my yard. And I haven't seen any rats or mice since I started doing that.

I do feed the squirrels. There are lots of squirrels in my area. They don't really seem to bother my garden much since I started feeding them (and the birds). There is only 1 bird feeder area. I feed the squirrels under the feeder on the tarp. Well, actually 2 seed feeders right now because I feed the Painted Buntings and other smaller migratory birds in the Fall/Winter/Spring. But the main seed feeder stays up year round. I always know when I do have rats/mice in my yard as the snakes start showing up to eat them. As long as none of the creatures are poisonous, I don't care. But I don't like the mice/rats. They do chew on everything and often chew up my plants. So my goal is to try to keep them out of my yard. The squirrels don't really bother anything at all. I guess I feed them pretty well since they don't desire anything else in my yard. Thumbs up

My yard is a wildlife habitat as well as a garden. I also have bird banders that have come to my yard to capture, record, and band the birds on occasion. And I also raise and release butterflies (caterpillars). I initially started gardening for butterflies and then it expanded to hummingbirds. So my garden is not just about daylilies or other plants. Without the wildlife, I don't think I would enjoy my garden as much. But that is just me ....

I agree The whole flower is such lovely soft shades. I'm guessing that's why they called it "Ash".

Becky, I have always left the grain on the ground for the bandicoots here. It is always gone in the morning. Now I look it up and find the marsupial bandicoot is insectivorous! So I think the rats have been laughing.

In feeding the wood ducks in the morning I have to ensure they have flown in first. I have just discovered the ibis is eating the seed. For a marsh bird they have sewer stomachs, the eat absolutely everything. I don't know why that long bill is needed. However, watching them strip meat off bones it is quite an amazing tool.

Gleni - That's funny! How big are those bandicoots? They remind me of opossums here. Only I bet the opossums are much larger?

I always find it amazing what some of the birds eat. We have a lot of water fowl here since we are so close to the ocean. Many of them have those long skinny curved bills. They like to dig around with their bills in soggy areas. Only the buzzards strip meat off bones here. People always think they are horrible birds, but they help keep the road kill from sitting around too long and stinking. I consider them nature's housekeepers.

Things are winding down here as far as daylilies go. Though I am seeing new leaf growth on several of the larger plants. Go figure! It's been horribly hot here. August and September are usually the hottest months of the year. Things should start cooling down the end of October. We've been very lucky this year and not had any hurricanes to threaten us .... yet. I hope that trend continues. Hurricanes are not my favorite weather threat.

I sure am glad that I live in good old Minnesota where we don't have the variety of critters that you all do. The few we do have pale in comparison to the zoo you all have.

If a cat brought a snake to me, the cat would be dead first and then the snake. I would probably be laying beside them dead from fright, lol.

This is my first year to use the pellets and I think I can see the difference. Next year will tell for sure. The morning after I put them down, there is a film that looks like mold on the surface. A day later it is gone. Is that normal???

Becky, Northern Brown Bandicoots are about 16"in body length with a little tail and nocturnal. They dig up parts of the garden chasing beetles but rarely do any significant damage. They get run over too much.

Karen, if you dig the pellets in a little bit around the plants they won't form that 'scum' before they start to sink into the soil. I made some alfalfa 'soup' a couple of times, and poured the stuff around my plants, which then formed that layer.

Yes, it takes some fortitude, and getting used to the 'living in a zoo' down here. You absolutely must be able to tolerate every kind of bug, fungus, plant disease and animal that comes along. If you don't, as you say folks don't last long with a garden here. My dh is not a gardener, so was not quite as quick to adapt, but now the snakes are the only thing that really bothers him. Even so, he helped me untangle a black snake from some bird netting I had wrapped around an orchid. The snake got its head and part of its body through the netting, and got stuck. It was making off with my orchid attached to it. So he had to hold on to the orchid with the snake attached while I cut a big enough hole for the snake to escape.

All that bragging aside, we have not encountered any venomous snakes here yet. I know they are around and how to ID them, but they are very shy, so no worries. The black snakes are 3ft. long, very fast and impressive looking but harmless and keep the rodent population in check. You see, if you killed the snake, and the cat you'd have more mice and rats to deal with. It's all nature's balance. You just have less nature to balance up there. But you have to put up with months of winter . . . I'll take wildlife over winter any day!

No desire for snow, as I would take lots of critters instead! I actually enjoy the wildlife. I would even enjoy the rats if they did not multiply so quickly. But there is a balance. I had a population explosion of rats a few years ago before I started using the tarp under my bird seed feeder. Next thing I know, there is a family of Bobcats in the undeveloped lots around my property. Rat problem solved. Though I still don't like the damage the rats do until a predator moves in. The Bobcats moved on after the food supply dwindled.

Glen - Your Northern Brown Bandicoots sound a bit similar in size to the Opossums here:
