Parks are closed because of dangerous broken branches.
There are broken trees all over the city.
Some power lines disrupted by the broken trees.
City funds being depleted by the cost of clean up.

Oh my goodness, that is just terrible. We have been having a stretch of good weather, warm sunny days, very cool nights.

Nature's way of ensuring we have enough mulch for winter.
It must be a cold winter coming.
Meanwhile we're back up above 20C.

We had a freeze here, I think about the time Caroline was getting snow, that took out my dahlias and did a bit of damage to my miniature roses. Freezing temperatures? In mid-September? Too weird! Blinking

We had a freeze early September that shut down a lot of my plants, the daylilies look like crap now. Sad

We had that too, very hard frost for a couple of nights that took out the dahlia's, some of which were just getting ready to bloom, and either took out or made a lot of other things look terrible. The fall flowers are just starting, the asters, and the flowering Kale, and the Snapdragons, seem to hold on through some cold but most of my flowers look pretty bad. I've started cleanup and this year has been so difficult, because of many weather related things, it isn't nearly as sad for me to put my garden to bed as it is many years. I'm with Caroline, and thinking about next year. I've already started my list for things to do and start for next year. Big Grin

Yes, if nothing else this crummy weather has encouraged me to get an early start on cleanup for next year. We have a helper coming today, too, to do some major cleanup. Smiling And I'm making a list of seeds I need to get. Green Grin!

Yesterday I noticed that one of my favorite daylilies had 3 scapes coming up with lots of buds, it is supposed to be a mid season bloomer, I know those buds will never get a chance to open...sigh!
Thumb of 2014-09-21/mcash70/58bf70

I am thinking of getting rid of a lot of the daylilies next year, they just do not perform well here.

That is so pretty Margaret! I would so sad if I had to get rid of my daylilies! But it does get so frustrating to wait for a year and then they don't do well. I'm always thinking that next year will be better, that way I don't have to make any decisions about getting rid of anything this year! Hilarious! I have the art of procrastination down to a fine art when it comes to getting rid of plants! Big Grin

Susie, I hate to get rid of plants too, and like you I have been telling myself that next year will be better, I have waited for up to 3 years for a daylily to bloom, and then the blooms are crappy, don't open properly, misshapen, that is crazy when so many other plants do so much better here.

Margaret, I agree, sometimes my patience finally does run out too. If after a couple of years one doesn't open well, it has to go to make room for one that will. I have one called Off To The Races that has one more year to do better and then, if it isn't opening better, it's a goner!

Susie, also without blooms daylily foliage is not really that attractive, and when you may only get a few blooms ever couple of years it just has to go.

I have the same problems you guys have with day lilies. And then another DG'r sent me some to try. So I have planted them and will hope for the best. This year my one bed actually bloomed all summer and had nicely formed flowers, the smaller ones. The taller ones like Corfu showed great promise but like you said they didn't fully open and then they were gone. Too disappointing. Well, I will try one more time. I think more water and more fertilizer might help. This has been a rainy summer so maybe mother nature did what I should have been doing all along.

I have some bulbs that maybe shouldn't make it through a 5a winter, so I put them on the south side near the granite foundation. On super cold days, the shining sun will warm the granite and there will be geothermal and whatever heat comes off the furnace from the other side of the granite block. I suppose that will not work in cold climates so far north you don't get much sun. Perhaps shoveling snow over the bulbs would insulate them from the air too.
