I've read some gardeners actually cut off the blooms from 1st year plants, I just can't bring myself to do so! I don't cut off sidebuds, either, so I can enjoy the blooms longer. I don't know if removing those first year blooms gives the plant enough of a head-start to justify denying myself the happiness the blooms provide....What do you all think?

That is too hard to do. I really cannot wait one more year to see it if I do not have to. That one bloom is the only motivating factor to prepare the bed and soil as well as I do. That is hard work! As my soil is hard clay, I have to add tons of amendments and that means digging and tilling in lot of compost and sand into the bed.

Annette, do you like the split cup daffodil? Do you have a pic of Tiritomba? I was looking at them but did not buy any this year. Are they as pretty as pictured? As I am used to the trumpet kinds, the split cup is kinda flat but they look so gorgeous in vendor's pictures.

Liz, I don't cut my 1st year or side buds off either. Call me crazy, but I have to see those blooms, I want every last one if them. I grow these plants for my pleasure, and don't mind if the blooms aren't as big because the plant wasn't disbudded.

Karen, I love the split cup and double daffodils. Here's a picture of Tiritomba. They're in my back garden bed.

Well, winter has arrived with three moose in the front yard. A mama and two babies (one a yearling and one from this year). Could be twins but one is definitely slightly bigger than the other. Tromping through my gardens. Nothing to pull up or eat except a little iris to which they are welcome. But their big hoofies can do damage to stuff underground as the ground is now thawed out. Have to mix up the Planskyyd to repel them till final freeze up.

Moose in the thawed garden does not sound good!

Those are nice looking peony roots.

I agree those roots look awesome. You have got a nice collection there with Henry Bockstoce being one of my favorite. Annette, thanks for posting pic of your daffodils. They are so pretty!

Mary, how cool is that! Seeing moose in your backyard. Are there other animals that you see in your neighborhood on a regular basis? Do you see elk?

It was the front yard. They wander down the street into the cul de sac thence into my front yard. No Elk. I don't know that we have elk here. And while bear have been see in other parts of the city I have never seen any here. Mostly they stay on the south side toward the upper hillside. They come in from that area following the moose.

Mary, I hope the moose didn't cause any damage in your garden. How do they survive during winter when everything is under so many feet of snow?

@Caroline and kousa thanks, I'm pleased with the tubers sent by Adelman's. M. Jules Eli
was the smallest on them all.

Liz, I do love peony planting time. I had a very productive day, I dug up and replanted Cora Loiuse, My Love, and Eliza Lundy, and moved them to the new bed. All 9 of the Adelman's peonies and the last 3 Fina Gardens peonies were also planted.

It was a beautiful, overcast day with an occasional brief drizzle, that made it perfect for working in the garden. The red clay was thankfully soft, and easy to dig into, thanks to the almost 3 inches of rain we had yesterday.

Hopefully the GH Wild peonies will arrive soon, so that I can get them planted.

No. I checked my peonies and no hooves landed there, nor on my newly planted lilies. I will mix the Planskyyd to day and spray.

Mary, I'm glad your plants weren't damaged.

My GH Wild peonies arrived on Thursday, however we travelled, and got back today, so I unpacked them this evening. I'm very pleased with what was sent, the tubers are fresh, healthy and full of pink pips. The least number of pips was 4, the most was 14 on Myrtle Tischler.

Thanks Mary, I hope I get some blooms. Hopefully, I'll get a chance to get them in the ground tomorrow. I'm very happy with what was sent from GH Wild, and I was able to take advantage of their end of season sale. I love a good bargain😁

I took advantage of the Songsparrow sale (buy 2, get one free), and just ordered Cheddar Charm, Krinkled White, and Pink Kisses. I've been wanting some single whites with prominent yellow centers for an area of the garden planted in white, yellow, and blue. Several new bearded Irises were just added to that area, in blues and yellows. Also have a spot in a pink bed where I've been thinking a short pink double would look great. I just finished planting fall bulbs yesterday, which was the last fall planting I had to do. As relieved as I felt to have it done, it's also kind of a bummer- time to wait through winter. Nice to have something else coming for a little more playing in the dirt Smiling

I got Pink Kisses this year, too, Neal. Looked really pretty in the pictures! Krinkled White is one of my all time favorites, stands up well and the flowers are so simple and pretty. Haven't seen Cheddar Charm in person, you'll have to report how you like it.

They were sold out of a couple of short pink doubles that have caught my attention too, Pink Flying Saucers and I think the other was Little Pink Charmer. Did you notice those? The form of both looks particularly pretty on those.

I got them both! It was Pink Charmer though, didn't see a Little in the name. Also got Little Pink Lullaby; they had quite the selection this year, didn't they?

Liz, Little Pink Lullaby- that's the other one I was looking at, and was blending the names, LOL. Sounds like we have similar tastes in Peonies....or we both just want 'em all, LOL.
