I live in southwestern Oregon. maybe 50 miles from the coast in the Illinois river valley. its quite dry this time of the year, the bears have already eaten my apples, and all grass is dry. even the periwinkle ground cover is wilting. around the base of an apple these blossoms have braved there way into bloom and then within a day, dried there way into the mix of dry weeds.
Im new to the area, and am like a child, discovering.

Lovely, Ric. I think they are Colchicum also known as False Autumn Crocus, and Naked Ladies (since they have no leaves when they bloom).
False Autumn Crocus (Colchicum autumnale)
They put up robust leaves in the spring, then the leaves die off during summer and the flowers pop up like that in the fall as a nice surprise.

Definitely a colchicum, but not Colchicum autumnale. More likely it is a species like C. variegatum or C. x agrippinum.

I have this plant, it has been on this property for at least 60 years. It is in full bloom right now. The checkered pattern on the petals makes it easy to identify.

Yes, those don't appear to be the same crocus. Very pretty. I'm not sure which one that would be.

Other colchicums have checkered petals. VL, can you say why you are so sure it is C. x agrippinum and not some other checkered colchicum?
