From the Convolvulaceae Family is the Genus Ipomoea which has over 500 species. Ipomoea is usually associated with Morning Glory's but there is so much more and not all of them are vines and climbers!

Feel free to add your own but please name the species.

Here are a few that I grow ... I'll start with the more common ones.

I. nil - Fujishibori and Shidare Morning Glory

Hmmm, why am I not finding I. evolvulus in our database? It's very pretty!

Because I made a mistake .. the genus is Evolvulus ... I was told it was I. evolvulus. It is in the Convolvulaceae Family. Thanks for the heads up!

Heh, greed does have it's uses! Hilarious!

Do you know of anywhere one can get seeds for this one? I would have to grow it as an annual here.

Great flowers Anne! My purple speckled one this year turned out not to be purple speckled! Yours is beautiful!

Woofie I don't believe Evolvulus makes seeds, you have to do cuttings.

Oh, I was afraid of that. Although one place I looked seemed to indicate that it could be grown from seed, but is generally propagated from cuttings. Rats!

Yeah .. no seeds and I've been hand pollinating like crazy. I will be taking cuttings though as I really do like this plant!

I love Morning Glories. I've only had one, as a houseplant, and it bloomed many times for me before dying about a year and a half later. I'd grow another one indoors in a minute.

Lots of people grow them indoors over the winter. The I. nils make lovely houseplants, if you have a good spot for them. Smiling

I just love the Stictocardia - I have seeds for the campanulata and beraviensis. I've held off planting them until I get a larger greenhouse.

I love the Hige's probably too well. Don't know the name of this one.

Anne,

I was going to post this in the Plant I.D. forum eventually, but seeing your photo of I. carnea - Bush/Tree Morning Glory has caused me to sneak it in here. I saw this growing in Arenal, Costa Rica. The size of the plant and bloom made me think first of Hibiscus, but the actual look of the blooms and foliage recalled Ipomoea. Do you think this might be the same? I need to check out the growing requirements for carnea.....

That definitely looks like the I carnea. Easy to start .. I use toenail clippers (they are hardcoat seeds) and clip of bits of the coat along one side. You want to clip off enough so that when the seed does germinate the coat will split in two and come off easy so you won't be stuck with your seedlings wearing silly hats. They like full blazing hot sun and lots of food and water.

I grew some out this year, pink and white and they are about 8 feet tall!

great MG arangment there Anne...I love how every day there's a different mix and placment of all the flowers..
Doonald/ it looks like carnea to me too... Arenal is lovely... everything grows well there... did you see the 40 ft tower of thunbergia there.. every inch of it stuffed with blooms... that's one place I'd revisit at any time.. the hot springs are fabulous there..it's a river/stream comming out of the ground near the volcano.. you choose how hot you'd like your water by how high up the mountain you go.. there are landscaped pools all the way up to choose from.. and a pounding water fall near the bottom to sit under...and a great massage / spa aera near by...MMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM

Gordon - Everywhere I went in Costa Rica there was incredible vegetation. Not so many photos, though. Not much of a camera person, really. The most spectacular thing on my visit to Arenal was the volcano which was rumbling and grumbling and spouting off! It chose to be extremely active on my days there and, unbelievably, the skies were clear so at night the lava flows were something to see. It upstaged anything else with the show. That left me time to photograph plants during the day because I wasn't moving so much.

Anyone have any idea why my Spanish flag have gone straight to seed? Thought it may be to do with sun levels but they face south and get direct sun from lunchtime onwards. I have a couple of others that have flowered up an obelisk with similar sun time exposure.
