Does anybody know, is this a good time to start new grass by seed? I keep getting all sorts of "advice" from the neighbors and I really dont feel like seeding an area and then having nothing come up.
I am not "country" I am "landed gentry."

*ignorance speaks here:*

Would it vary depending on what grass you're seeding? I always thought protecting grass seed from birds was a bigger issue than time of year. I'm pretty sure I remember seeding a small area with rye grass seed in September and having it do just fine, but that was in Siskiyou County, CA (very different climate) and it was on top of where I had removed a compost pile so the soil was killer-rich.

I've heard it depends on whether you're sowing 'cool weather' grass or wam weather grass. I think when temps start cooling off is the time to sow cool weather grass. But others probably will know more on this point than me!

I'm in the same zone as you are, Annie. We sow our grass seed in late september, wait 4 weeks, then fertilize with Scott;s step 4 or any winter proofing mix.
