It looks a lot like Dr. Huey, commonly used as the rootstock for grafted roses. It survives when the grafted rose dies and is therefore a familiar (although unwelcome) sight in many gardens.
It's a once-blooming climber with very few thorns and it is resistant to black spot, but it can suffer from powdery mildew. I personally like it, but many people regard it as a sign of failure and consequently have no affection for it.
