Many, many thanks. Group hug I have found Dendrobium loddigessi in my catalogue so that means I have it or have had it.

Oh good! This one is solved! Smiling

I have a really good, well established plant of Den loddigesii, it produced one bloom in all these years. No matter where I keep it, it just grows over the Summer / goes somewhat dormant during the indoor season and doesn't bloom. Any ideas, Melissa and Glen?

Cute Den dichaeoides and Aerangis luteo-alba!

Here is a still fairly small Orchid, picked up a few years ago from Ooi Leng Sun/a Malaysian vendor. To my surprise a couple of weeks ago it started to produce a really long pendulous spike. This morning the buds were open.
I just read that those blooms close down at night and open in the morning with sunshine.
This is Coelogyne rochussenii and I detect a scent of sorts.

Okay for Den loddigesii, you have to treat it like the habitat where it grows. It is picky. It goes dormant in the fall/winter with very little watering (we just mist a little bit every other day). It must have a winter cool snap but no lower than 45 (and it should be pretty dry during that time to avoid rot or cold damage). Assuming it will bloom in the spring, you start to water slightly more only when you see new growth in the spring. Then it should bloom.

Now, to make sure you create new growth you must give it a monsoon season with lots of watering and light (2500 lumens - just under Cattleya type light). So it should get bright open sun (not direct) and warm humidity for 2 months at least with daily drenching (it really should be mounted) temps should go up to the 80s with HIGH humidity. In the summer, this orchid gets 12" per month of rain on average. We drench ours twice a day in the summer and if really hot a third time in the evening. Ours is mounted with only a small amount of moss. It is about 3' long on a 6" wide mount. HUGE.

Ursula, nice first blooming of your coel! I have several 'necklace coel' growing in the halves of an old fans. I found this idea on one of ATP's forums recently and it is really an easy project. Unfortunately I put them in together and can not name each one until it blooms again. So, soon as I can hang them they won't be taking up so much room. One of my favs.

Melissa, I think I do well in Summer outside with this Dendrobium, it does grow ok, although we are not talking 3 feet like yours. I tip my hat to you.
The cool and dry Winters are were I am lacking. I need to find a different, cooler spot in the house!
Thanks!

Roberta, thanks! I think I remember that growing tip in the halves of a fan! Next time they bloom (or if you have time to take a quick picture please) , I really would love to see a picture of your arrangement. My plant was just a bit wrapped with some Coconut fiber when I bought it and the roots are now starting to grow over that. I probably should give it something to hold better on to.

Gleni, I knew I had seen your bloom somewhere before when doing primary hybrid research.

It is a primary hybrid cross of C. forbesii and L. purpurata (Lc Cypheri). I remember seeing it because I love the veining in forbesii.

Here is an excellent example showing the bifoliate leaves, the green sheath, and the flowers.

Bert, I am shipping your 'Big Buggah' out tomorrow. It will be in bloom. When I returned from the Kentucky game, all three of these plants were in bloom.

You might remember this little plant which popped up in our small backyard bog a couple of years ago. I had potted it up and it turned out to be Spiranthes cernua. In the meanwhile some more little plants appeared in this pot and one of them is blooming now. This one is nicely Anise scented.

So pretty, Ursula! Such dainty little flowers! I love it! And the moss gives it such a beautiful touch. Smiling

Had to add that I adore the scent of Anise! Oh how I wish we had smell-o-vision!!!

glad you like it! Smiling
Tara, imagine a whole hill of these plants in bloom!
There is a slope along Rt 380 in Pennsylvania towards Scranton full of those. In most years with enough rain, around Labor Day you can stop the car and look at hundreds of these in bloom. Stop there at sundown and the whole hill smells of Anise! We check on them every year,

Ken, got the 'Big Buddah'. A fine plant and tons of new roots! It should do fine for me since a summer outside certainly agrees with this species. I'm Leaving it as is, and yes the flower color is truly purple and intense on the lip. My Catt specie count is now at 9. I'm Taking my catts to Goodwins Nursery next week, they have offered to board until I finish moving. My sister Cathy has everything else in her greenhouse now.

Happy Halloween everyone. I'm on door duty handing out candy to all the little goblins. Only a few so far. It seems like each year we get less.

I spent the day working on a construction project at the Extension Service and am pretty tired. Here are some pics from the Orchid Expo last weekend:

This Bulbo was a big winner.

We had the average for us on Trick or Treaters coming by. Except for a bag of M&Ms the sweets are gone. I had fun watching our two preschoolers in their costumes at the school parade this morning. Very cute!
Very nice pictures, Jim! Looking terrific with your winning plants! Thumbs up Beautiful extras too, I love the saturated color on the "yellow ribbon".
