Ok, we'll do this and it's going to be fun!

This year the only awards will be microbadges for first place in each category, and one extra badge for Best of Show.

In 2015 I will get a sponsor to donate some prizes for wins.

Does anyone have any thoughts on categories? How many categories do we want? I think it's better to start small and add more categories in future years, so maybe 5 to 8 categories?

No matter how many categories you decide on, people will want more.

Annuals, perennials, bulbs (including rhizomes, tubers, corms, etc.), roses, cacti and succulents, landscapes, containers, trees/shrubs. That's 8!

Only flowers and ornamentals? no vegetable garden type photos? or would those be included in the 'annual' category?

What about a 'wildflower' category?

How about making the contest a little more focused, but have several contest throughout the years. You could have contest like.

Gardens - categories Flowers Garden Your Yard, Flower Garden Public Gardens, Vegetable Gardens etc.
Wildflowers - categories Individual Flowers, Multi-Plant Photos, Landscapes.
Ornamental Plants - categories Perennial, Annuals, Tropicals, Close-ups, Garden Setting, Non Flowering.
You could have a contest centered around popular plants. Like Roses and Daylilies. Pick the top 5 or 10 most popular plants and make each one a category.
