For me it's a small comfort in the thought that my images won't be used where and how I wouldn't expect them to be used. For instance; take a plant that I've invested a lot of time, effort and perhaps some monetary outlay to grow and nurture, sometimes for years before the first bloom appears, and then to see my photo of it with a big circle and slash across it promoting its demise in an herbicide ad, or perhaps used as a promotional device by a company whose practices I don't agree with. Small chance of that happening, I know, but I still wouldn't want to see it. Copywriting images can give the photographer recourse in attempting to circumvent this type of annoyance.
I've been contacted by a photomedia acquisition company to submit photos for client consideration, and although I'd like to think that the sale of my photos might offset costs incurred in growing the subject matter, I'm finding that I don't enjoy waiting for a response. Time will tell on that I guess, but it would still be nice to get a small percentage of return if my images are used for commercial gain.
! You would think that if they are growing this plant to sell they could simply step out the door and take their own photo of it.
