I love the beautiful mini roses that I see in the grocery and "home" stores and would love to grow some but....... I have bought several and within a few weeks or months they die Crying

I have tried keeping them inside for a little while because I know they are hothouse grown and delicate...I have tried outside in a protected area but they all end up with the foliage "drying out", falling off and then they just fade away. I've tried to keep them watered properly...watering well then letting the soil dry just a bit...

I don't have a place to put them in the ground so I would need them potted....

Any helpful ideas please......and thank you Smiling
I hate losing plants....I know they are "just plants" but when you nurse them along and baby them and get them to grow, bloom, and be pretty and they die....it's like losing a friend..... Crying

Kim - I've successfully grown grocery store minis outside, but never inside. I never water them enough for their tastes! I water them pretty heavily & frequently their first year in ground for me, and I've had about an 80% success rate. But I can't help you if you are gonna pot them up.. I suck at potted plants. LOLLL!!! Here's my minibed. Some of these are grocery store roses, some are ones I ordered.

I've had good luck growing grocery store minis in the ground outside as long as I get rid of all the original potting medium. It's a medium designed to keep the plants looking fresh for a long time in the store without extra care, and it holds too much moisture for long-term growth. I shake all of it off and plant the roses as bare-root plants.

Kim ....

This is probably very much the wrong time of year for you to start container grown miniature roses in your zone. I'd suggest you hold off until next spring after the last frost date for where you garden.

Zuzu is right about getting rid of the the planting medium you get when you buy the plants. That's the first important step.

You are correct in trying to protect the young plants because they have been grown in greenhouses, but growing them indoors won't work well with roses. Roses are outside plants. To harden them off after you have put them in decent potting soil, you keep the plant in partial shade outdoors, gradually moving it towards a spot where it gets more sunlight. (That's why I am suggesting to wait until spring to purchase new roses.) Those roses are a lot tougher than you think.

Another thing to consider when you purchase a rose from a big box store or a grocery store is that as long as they have been in those stores, they have not been cared for properly and you are buying a plant that is already stressed. It doesn't mean it won't make it, but as a friend says, "Those roses are half dead because they haven't gotten what they want."

It sounds like you are watering them correctly. Just hold off feeding them anything until they show new growth. That tells you that the root system is working. When you do feed them, feed them lightly and often. Make sure you have watered the container the day before you feed them and you won't have to worry too much about fertilizer burn.

I have never planted a tiny rose like that directly in the ground and live in a milder climate, so Toni can give you better advice if you want to put them directly into the ground than I can.

I did work in a miniature rose nursery early in my rose life and the owner of that nursery is the one who stressed that miniature roses, or any other rose, are not inside plants.

I hope this helps.

Lyn

Toni...your rose bed is beautiful.....but 2 big dogs that like to "help" me garden prevents me from putting very much into the ground!!!

Zuzu....never thought about cleaning off the old soil but that is a very good point....

Lyn.....yep....things are starting to die down around here....I always get "the bug" this time of year to plant things....guess it's my way of saying "NOOOOOOOOO" to the cold and snow UGH!!!!

Next spring when the roses start showing up I'll try everything you all have suggested... maybe it will be the year I can grow some!!

Thank You! everyone!!!

Kim - LOLLLLLLLL! I understand big dogs wanting to help with the gardening.. I have 2 medium dogs and one would LOVE to help me garden. I used to have a huge golden retriever who would retrieve anything, including new pine trees that I had just put in the ground!! Rolling on the floor laughing Rolling on the floor laughing Rolling on the floor laughing I ended up breaking my yard up so that they had their area they could destroy (which they did) and then *my* area where I could plant whatever I wanted. And it worked!

Kim ....

I understand. My winters are not as long or cold as yours, but I do get cabin fever before spring shows up.

I am planting bulbs to satisfy my need to plant right now !

Feel free to ask questions next spring, too.

Smiles,
Lyn
