I would root the tops before the frost hits them. So there would be more plants come spring.

I do not think I have time to root any pieces. We have maybe two more weeks above freezing at night. I did take a few pieces off some of one Sedum I have a lot of that I could risk if it did not root.

If you have a spot in a pot, the tips could be put in a pot coming inside for winter. I do that to multiply hardy plants sometimes. If it makes it, cool, more plant material I can add to the yard in spring. If not, it was scheduled to be a victim of Jack Frost anyway ;)

Tiffany good idea! I have done that with a couple sedum this year my "lemon ball" (mexicanum - don't really know what this is called) but last year it melted in the cold so this year I brought in some cuttings

I will try but I have not had luck with hardy sedum surviving in the house in the winter. I brought a large order from a online vendor of hardy sedum and semps one year and most died. They seem to need the cold treatment to survive.

Maybe rooting would work since they are not actual plants with roots needing the cool rest period. I will report back and let you know it it works. You did help me with the P-Shield and it worked you may have come up with another help me idea Tiffany.

Cinta to be clear - the sedum I brought inside are mostly from mexico and cold hardy to zone 8 or 9, so only marginal for me here (plus we get so wet that they don't like that) I don't think these ones need any cold, but they do need airflow, so I have a fan going along with grow lights for this pot, the others are in windowsills, I leave my windows open most of the winter so there is airflow that way. I've been spray misting them since they don't seem to like being too wet, just until they get more rooted!

Cinta, I'm as confused about that as anybody! No idea which, if any, hardy Sedums need a cold period. I'd never heard of Sedums as house plants until 'discovering' that I actually do like cacti/succulent plants so recently. There's a whole different crowd of those. I get very confused trying to investigate the hardiness of some of them (if I can even figure out what they are.)

In OH, one can't throw a rock w/o hitting an 'Autumn Joy' plant, prob the same way in PA. But haven't seen any of the *MANY* hardy Sedums I'd collected in OH, to play with here. If you give it a try, letting the cuttings callous overnight, up to a few days, would probably be a good idea & I look forward to updates if you do.

I have tons of unorthodox ideas for plants... a lot of them actually work! LOL! Either way, trying is a blast to me. Glad to infect anyone with experimentitis! ;)

Tiffany totally agree!! Try it and see what happens! Cinta, I didn't realize you meant the upright sedum, yes those probably do need some dormant time to then begin again and work at building blooms!!

Sedums by the trunk-load are so easy to find in OH, it never occurred to me to bring some to AL... and a few of the plants I brought are *weeds!!* LMAO!!!

It's not a garden, it's an adventure! I'm still trying to figure out what the heck people are doing down here for a lot of things. Fun stuff!

Yes I am talking about the upright Sedum. They need the cold. I am bringing in the tender sedum that I know have not been hardy in my area. We were talking about the Sea Urchin one in another topic. I tried that one a couple times and it does not last outside for the winter so I am going to bring it in this year.

If evergreen I can see the sedum surviving indoors. If not I do not think I will have much success.

I will break a piece off and see what happens. Will let you know. Right now I probably have more dirt in the house than I have outside. I brought my tropicals inside. I grow them in pots. The Bananas, EE, Cannas, Calla Lillies, I even have a tender Hydrangea that comes in for the winter.
