I posted this on Dave's, but didn't get a response. I bought this philodendron at TX A&M 5 yrs ago. I planted it at the base of oak tree, and covering it with a blanket during our mild winters was enough protection....except for this winter. I did manage to cut a section off before the freeze to root. There was no ID on it when I bought it and the students didn't know what it was. The leaves are at least 18" long. The leaves were about half that size when I bought it. It's/was growing up the tree with a Beaumontia.
Bubbles, it resembles either Philodendron billietiae or Philodendron atabapoense. What color is the underside of the leaf blade and what color are the petioles? If you can post good closeup photos of both the top and bottom of the blade I think I can figure it out but a good photo of the stem and petiole will also help.
As for anyone that wants Epipremnum aureum cuttings (big ones) I'll gladly start cutting and sending in late March or early April. Someone remind me then and I'll let you know when we start to trim them up. Right now there are runners 8 and 10 feet long out in the pond! It is just too cold in the water to cut them and Janice would kill me if I asked her to get them.
I'll get a pic as soon as I can in the morning. Thanks you for looking at it. And as for the cuttings, please count me in! I would love to have a cutting of that plant.
Steve, the rooted cutting I have has lost it's leaves, so I'm trying to find a better photo. I might have to wait until spring when I can put it out to sit in the warm sunshine. I'll look up the two possible IDs and maybe I can tell from photos. I really appreciate your help. It was 72 here Sunday...and we're expecting 2 inches of snow tomorrow!
I have heart shaped philodendron cuttings I bought from someone on ebay months ago. Was not happy when I got them because the bid did not specify the cuttings were unrooted. I tried rooting powder on them until I noticed one was dying. I moved them to a jar of water. It has been months and am still waiting for roots. One of the cuttings is showing a LITTLE root. I have some liquid root stimulator. You think if I added some of that to the jar of water it would help them to develop roots?
I think cuttings in winter is just iffy. I've had success and failures. Even cuttings with arial roots can fail (boy did i feel dumb) but come spring they root easier. Was it cold when they were sent? I don't know anything about root stimulator, but if it has a root showing, it has decided to give it a shot. Is it this one? http://davesgarden.com/guides/...
I got one last year that is now 6 feet long, so after I move the plants out, and spray the carp out of them, I can send you cuttings, or root you a few for a basket :).
Actually, I did try that once when I was very young. Stepmom tried to teach me. For some reason I did not find it appealing. Crosstitch was more my bag. Don't do it now. Hard to see the little holes. Does this mean I am old?
