Well I guessed wrong, altho I can see why in the scheme of things, WPW would win an award. I was especially glad to see that Dorothy and Toto got the second most votes. I love her..and Im happy for Tim as well.

Guess I don't get it.

Maybe they were judged on personality as well as appearance?

What do you mean?

There are requirements to win the Stout (receiving an award of merit twice for example) perhaps one of the garden judges can enlighten us further.

Perhaps Pat was being sarcastic. As in she wasn't thrilled with the winners. I did notice alot of UFs in the Award of Merit selections. I'm not partial to most UF's so that meant I didn't and don't get the fascination with them. Each to their own of course...........Maryl

Yes, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I don't care for Doubles ( sorry double lovers) that said, I would like to add Dorothy and Toto. I do have a couple for Mom. She thinks they look more like roses, which she has always loved.

I love my big, ole, beautiful UFs Rolling my eyes.

They all look good. Congrats. It will be another century before they reach Australia. Sighing!

Maybe Julie will chime in. I know a daylily must receive an Honorable Mention and an Award of Merit before being eligible for the Stout Medal. None of the three awards are easy to achieve because they have to be voted for by us Garden Judges in several different regions. Other words the daylily must preform well over a large area and not just where the daylily originated.

I like doubles when they are perfect, and look like camellias.

I agree with Fred. In my own words...its not about the look, but the performance and good plant habits. That means, like Fred said, growing over a wide area, and growing somewhere other than a greenhouse.

True, if a plant is a great performer it can quickly become a favorite.

Like Fred said, all three awards are difficult to achieve. In the first step, Honorable Mention, to receive the award a cultivar must receive votes from at least 4 different regions, with a final total of at least 20 votes. Garden Judges can vote for no more than 12 of the nominated cultivars. This year there were nearly 250 cultivars nominated for the HM. After 3 years cultivars that received the HM are then placed on the ballot for the Award of Merit. For the Award of Merit cultivars must receive votes from at least half of the 15 regions and no more than one third of the total votes for the cultivar can be from any one region or the tabulation formula kicks in. With the formula excess votes are removed to create the balance of regions and votes required. The 12 cultivars with the most votes are then awarded the AOM. ( If there are ties in the votes of the top 12 there can be a few more that receive the award.) In two years the AOM cultivars are placed on the ballot for the Stout where there is only one winner, the one that receives the most total votes . There must have been nearly 300 cultivars on the AOM ballot this year and judges can only vote for 12.

Congratulations to all the award winners... including Fred for receiving an Honorable Mention for Lillian's Thin Ice! I tip my hat to you. Hurray! I was also excited to see Itsy Bitsy Spider, a personal favorite of mine, received an Honorable Mention. Still remember the first time I saw it blooming... and just had to have it.

Some online pics of these plants look more impressive.
If they all have strong personalities or plant habit, then they are wonderful.

Congratulations to the winners and all who participated.

A daylily has to go through some pretty rigorous voting to earn Stout!

Congratulations Fred, on receiving Honorable Mention for Lillian's Thin Ice Hurray! Hurray!

Yes, congratulations to Fred and I'm sure that is not the last thing you win Fred. Your flowers are bound to win more eventually.
