Don't Throw Out Those Pelargoniums at the End of the Season!

By jvdubb

Storksbill geraniums (Pelargoniums) are a beloved staple in summer containers and landscaping. Every fall most of the summer's selections end up being tossed out, or composted, without a second thought. What you might not know is that Pelargoniums are simple to overwinter, and not as houseplants that require care!

Thanks Jennifer!

I noticed that my mom tossed out a few of these not long ago, so I may have to rescue them. I appreciate the storage tips! Thumbs up

When you say 'cool' storage, roughly how cool would that be translated to Fahrenheit measurements (just approximately)? Big Grin

I want to do this! but the choices I have for winter storage are the shed which is outside and unheated so will be subject to winter temperatures, or the basement, which does receive heat from the house though it's a bit cooler down there.

Hmm. I will likely try paper bags in the basement. There are some really nice pels in the urns out front that I'd love to save!

@kylaluaz , give it a try! Really you have nothing to lose. If they don't make it you just delayed tossing them. But they just might survive!

Thanks! That's my intention. I bet they make it. It's a magic basement, I've been told.

I brought in the three plants I found, and as a nice bonus there was a tag with them too. Thumbs up Patriot Cherry Rose. Big Grin

Will do, Jennifer. Smiling
They look like the top three in your second picture (third set), so they'll probably be just fine.

Thanks everyone for info on overwintering pelargoniums. I followed the general directions, put them upside down in cardboard boxes and stored on a bench in the pump house with some newspapers over the top of the boxes to keep out light from the heat lamp in there (used in deep winter). I'm labeling the whole thing as An Experiment, but have hope!
