Lovely bloom Planto! Lovey dubby

My spider plants are quite happy too during this part of Fall..more cool moisture in the air, cold at nights but still bearable.

That might be an indication as to why my other 'Bichetii' started blooming in January. That's interesting!

I get my blooms during late Spring-early summer, temps just warm and comfy for them range 75-85...higher than that it just maintains the leaves. I have them outdoors year round though in part sun/shade.

Oops..just edited that..meant late Spring..not late Fall.

Its wonderful to see that people care.... even if the masses say its only a plant. I have serval large or to be large plants i will have to possibly rehome one day. assuming they live that long.

Home depot isnt great for plant shopping IMHO. while there prices are fantansic in my area they dont even properly cover plants up when you must bring them outside to a car/mode of transportation in mn in november/december. Keep in mind that by buying plants from those places you are helping put more plants in that suitation- supply and demand so to speak.

I'll add Tradescantia sillamontana (kitten ears) to this list. I thought I was letting stuff get too dry last winter, but the same thing is happening this year. Apparently these like to discard prior growth and start again from the roots over winter, at least in the culture of a pot that goes out for summer, in for winter, and in my care.

Hypoestes does the same thing.

Interesting thread. I prefer not to buy those half dead plants you see in garden centres or big box stores. It's really shocking the way some places treat their stock. And sometimes you do have to admit defeat and just throw some plants away.
But having said that, I have on occasion rescued plants from other people's neglect. Cacti and succulents are probably the best success stories as they have the capacity to store water in their tissues for longer.
About 5 years ago I moved into a new office and found an Echinops behind a blind on a windowsill which had obviously been there for months. It was very shrivelled. I brought it home, repotted and carefully watered it.

This is a Sansevieria I bought from Ebay several years ago. It too arrived in a quite shrivelled state.

It recovered wonderfully well.

This Sansevieria I literally rescued from a bin. I've no idea why as it wasn't in bad condition apart from some yellowing lower leaves which is normal. Someone in the same office had put this S hahnii in the kitchen bin. Fortunately I went to make a cup of tea soon after! I took it home.

Thumb of 2015-01-24/kniphofia/acc028

It's recovered beautifully.

For those who remember the Aloe I was able to save from root rot (if not, here's a picture of it in recovery below), I have a picture of it today:

Bought a mostly dead Easter Cactus from Lowe's for $1.00 hoping to bring it back to life. Since I didn't do any research I automatically put the plant in bright sunshine out on the porch. *Blush* It almost died from sunburn. Crying
After doing some reading I relocated the plant in a shady spot and here was my reward.

Thought of another one. Got a few Chrysothemis bulbs in trade a few yrs ago, they are in communal pots with other plants (good thing!) They completely disappear during winter, then, when it's gotten warmer at night again, grow back.

This discussion also makes me think about plants that can easily be saved over winter, usually used as annuals, but still often become hideous looking, or even go dormant. In retrospect, I'm sure I've thrown out dormant plants before... I did learn how to store the bulb ones, but not soon enough to save all.

I've thrown away braided Ficus benjaminas before but now know the leaves just fell off because they were moved. Should have waited.

Begonias of all types, the cane types especially often discard the older canes, but given a chance, nicer, new ones show up. Doesn't have to happen if you have better light for them than I do, but it's OK if it does.

Mandevilla vine, was probably just dormant.

Plectranthus 'Mona Lavender,' now I see it's just mad inside, it's not dying & can rebound outside again.

Shamrock (Oxalis) bulbs, went dormant, as did...

This plant is a California native called Coreopsis gigantea. Quite pretty when it is in season. But when it goes into dormancy, you would think you have outrightly killed it. But be very patient, it is really just sleeping. So many times last summer, that I feel like I have killed it. But now it is slowly waking up. Sometimes, just got to know its culture, so knowing the natural dormancy times will help us continue caring for a seemingly dead looking plant. The best part for this plant when asleep, is to leave it alone, no water, no fertilizing...oftentimes it is hard not to water..so I keep this away from my other plants, so I do not accidentally kill it with love.

Photo last Apr 2014 when I first got it

Dormant, looks so dead during the dry warm days to summer

Finally, this winter, it is slowly waking up from its slumber...yey! Still alive!
