Yes, in full sun. It is up some 7ft now. It wasn't full sun until the leafhoppers severely ruined the Pandanus. Much of the foliage has gone.

I have one very similar to yours, Glen. Tag is long ago lost in the mass of foliage so I'm glad to have the name again. Mine's in the shifting shade of an oak tree but could probably do better if it was in more sun. It's had no water for over a week so I can't post a picture just now.

I really like that Trigger plant. Must be fun to watch it hammer the bugs! I really need more carnivores around here - way too many mosquitoes in my garden despite my efforts to discourage them with dunks and coffee grounds.

@Maiden it seems that you keep yours indoors under lights, and in a little clear dome to maintain good humidity? I've never been able to get a Venus Flytrap to survive even in the hot, humid summer here. Is there a secret besides warm and humid?

I'd love to see more names (even the common names are good) to go with your pictures, too.

Yes, is there a secret to Venus Fly Traps? I have killed legions, alas.

Elaine: i didnt realize that. All my pictures are there, with the names: Flickr.com/dals09
Sorry for that !!

They are no secret about dionaea. They need cool day and night(24/17C), full sun, a airy and drained soil mix and crystal clear water, no tap water. The relative humidity is not a major point with dionaeas, i grow mine in 40%.

So here the main lines to make your lil guy happy for years:

-Distilled (0ppm) water only

-Soil always moist, not wet. Never let it dryout.

-Airy acid soil mix(example 33/33/33 peat moss/perlite/oak chunks). (No nutrients, these plants grow in very poor and acid soil, thats why they are carnivorous).

-Full sun or strong T5 tubes.

-No feeding is needed, but it can help. (Insects only, no meat).

Hope this help ! :)

Thanks Francois! I was doing a lot of things wrong, then.

Will need to bring them indoors in the summer here, to keep the temps down. Also a lighter soil mix than I was using will surely help. Full sun is a relative term, comparing Montreal to Florida, but I was keeping mine in the shade, so will give it some morning and later afternoon sun and see how we do.

So, if I catch a bug or mosquito, can I just drop it in the flower? It doesn't need live insects?

Elaine, i wrote some articles about plants nutritions.

I think you will like this one:

http://www.carnivorousplants.o...

The only place they grow in the wild is in north carolina, in very open vegetation areas. Trust me they can handle massive sun all day long, if the temperature is not extreme.

Cheers!

Try going to california carnivores if you can or order online from them. they are a nurshery that sells them.

I myself like the north american pitcher plants, because they can handle mn winter better then more declicate types. still have to go in a fridge but they will survive.

Yes welcome in :)

Im new around here too !

California carnivores is a great place to get cps. The owner (Dallas) is a friend and his plants are amazing.

Another great place, is wistuba.com
Dr Andreas Wistuba have great plants, rare ones. He collect the plants on the field himself. Its the place i get almost all my heliamphoras. I think he have a US distributor, lucky you. Here in Canada, i have to use a plants import permit with a phyto sanitary certificate to get plants :)

Damn plants addiction :P
