Thanks for the comments all.
In your zone I would think you can do anything you want with daylilies Becky. I plant, transplant, and divide all winter here.

Hi Fred,

Have any of the leaves on your seedlings, yellowed and aged naturally? If they have, do you clean them away before taking the photographs? May I ask when the seeds were planted (if that is different from when the seedlings were planted in the beds)? In other words, do you start the seeds indoors or do you plant seeds directly into the beds? If you start them indoors, how long is that before you plant the seedlings outside in their beds?

I do not clean the seedlings, a few of the lower leaves do die but, not many during this time of growth. The seed are planted 4-5 weeks before being transplanted to the beds, most will have there third leaf at the time of transplanting.

Fred - Thanks! Looks like I may have a project to do while on my 2-week Holiday Break from work! LOL! Can't wait! I have a bunch of seedlings in a bed that really needs amending and fertilizing. Weather is nice, so I am going to get on it!

Maybe they will look more like yours in a couple of months .... Thumbs up

Have posted a new photo taken yesterday, Jan 12 2015. We were in the teens and 20s for about three days with very little damage to the babies.

I'm really looking forward to the next progress update. Any chance you can do this all the way through 'til next October? That'd be a full year plus a month give or take. A visual benchmark for growing seedlings!

I will continue until at least May, by that time there will be lots of bloom and the foliage will be as large as it's going to get. In September and October I will be moving some that have rebloomed to the hybridizing area. It has been ideal growing weather the past few weeks with highs in the 60s and 70s and lows in the 40s and 50s.

I am new to growing daylilies from seeds but thanks to Mike I have some seeds to play with. I put them in water about a weeks ago and several have germinated. I moved four to pots and noticed that the rest are also popping. Obviously I am working with very different weather conditions here, but I have lighted rolling racks in the garage. It runs about 55F out there in the winter. I ran the lights down to about 2" from the pots. The directions said to put the lights as close as possible. That will certainly warm them also. I doubt that any will bloom this year as our growing season is very short and rather cool. But they should be outside by 'planting out' day around the middle of May. I only have three raised beds (4x8) but I am tempted to dedicate at least part of one to the babies I get. Then I also am germinating Siberian iris that will need a home outside. Not so worried about them as they grow wonderfully well up here.

Sounds good Mary, they should grow very well with 55*, just keep them damp and raise the lights as they grow.

@ Oberon46, hi Mary good to see you. Thanks for sharing the good news on your new babies. Rolling on the floor laughing . It should be fun to watch them grow and flower. Starting them now will definitely give them a head start. After I get caught up on the "honey do" list I'm going to start many myself. Keep us posted.

Have uploaded a new photo taken Feb 11 2015, they now have a little burn on the foliage from weather earlier in the month. Also not as much growth in Feb as previous months.

Fred - Thank you! Those look so amazing! Mine are so much smaller. I think it is my compact soil. You use pine fines instead of the ground soil, right?

I am so excited. Cajun Sunshine has sent up a seedling. I really didn't think I could do it. I don't even care if it blooms this year or next, the fact is the seed sprouted. I am still waiting for Victorian Lace to pop out a root or whatever in its little water pouch so I can get one into soil. No luck yet. Just Cajun Sunshine and Sears Towers Mixed.

Becky I add about 2" of pine fines to the soil.

Maurice had asked about increase sometime back, while fertilizing yesterday I did notice a some with 3-4 fan increase, here are three that was pretty easy to get a photo of.

(Trying not to sound too stupid *Blush* ) By seedling increase you mean increased foliage, leaves? Or that there are more popping up out of the soil.

Impressive Fred!!! Hurray! Hurray! Hurray!

I wished I could see that here. My issue is the compact soil and sand. I need to add more pine fines to my soil, I think. Otherwise my grow and bloom well, just not nearly as good as yours! LOL!

If seeds don't send out a little root while in water packets should I just plant them anyway? Victorian Lace shows a little tiny bit of white on the seeds but nothing else so far. The bag of mixed seeds also has not shown signs of sprouting.
