I was very happy to find these Easter Cacti (Hatiora) at my local nursery! I've never grown them before, actually didn't know they existed before reading about them on this thread, so I am excited to see how well they do. I had trouble choosing which color to buy, but finally settled on these two. They were only $4.99 each.

Wow they really do look different from what I've seen - so I guess what I have is Thanksgiving and Christmas haha

There really is a difference. Christmas and Thanksgiving cactus are Schlumbergera truncata. Easter cactus are Hatiora gaertneri.

Everyone get their orders in to Whitton Greenhouse? I got mine a couple days ago - gorgeous!

Hi Alisa, Is this a named cultivar or are you guessing at the name? I'm not a moderator so just my personal opinion - if you aren't sure of your plant's name I'd put your photo in the Hatiora spot rather than the cultivar name. I tip my hat to you.

Yes! The cultivator name! I am trying to get as close as possible because they didn't write the name in on the plant.

So personally I think you should put it in the portion of the database that is the main entry for the plant and leave off the cultivar name (if that makes sense) this way our ATP database stays accurate. I have had questionable plants that I've added and later felt it does a disservice to the clarity of the database. Thanks for asking this question though because it is important! It also is possible that there are only 2 or 3 cultivars with your color bloom or some other distinguishing attribute which would then allow you to make a better guess - in your research into this plant you may already know that, I know nothing, I just know that when I first joined ATP I didn't realize the value of a clean and accurate database I tip my hat to you.

Thanks! I will wait for more defined Easter cactus plant with an accurate cultivar. I got this plant at a garden center with no name! The big problem with the garden center sellers!

What a pretty shade of orange, Alisa! What Greg said is spot-on. If you don't know the cultivar name and there's no way to be sure, (multiple orange ones, for example, if there are multiple orange ones for EC,) going with just the species is always safe.

The plants sold as Easter cactus are all Hatiora gaertneri, AFAIK.
Easter Cactus (Hatiora gaertneri)

Unless you happen to find the H. rosea. Not a plant in mass production, also AFAIK. Not a plant people often show pics of, at ALL, if they're out there en masse. And if they are "out there" on shelves in BBS's during Easter, we are truly uninformed (and can't tell the difference.) I've never seen a "holiday cactus" discussion that mentioned Hatiora x graeseri, but it is a prominent feature of the Wiki Hatiora gaertneri article. Hmm...?

Thanks! I am just enjoying the cactus! I just listed Hatiora! It's sad that cactus are not marked correctly at garden center! Garden centers should not sell plants without proper identification! I had a similar problem with a Ric Rac Orchid cactus. I have Ric Rac Orchid ( Epip Anguliger) selling on Facebook. A garden grower listed a Ric Rac Orchid as (Crptocereus anthoyannus) the Synonyn name! The grower said what I had was not a true Ric Rac! If allthingplants wasn't here I would have been discredited! Some people on Facebook don't care! But they are different plants! I am so confused about grower and buyers!

That is gorgeous. Do you by chance have any trimmings?
I am also looking for a flat orange Easter also. I think they are called Hatiora
Do you keep them root bound or mist them? It was 20% humidity today. So they stay in the AC. instead of 91

oh forgot to ask. How often do you fertilize and with what. Could I mist with my air plant fert? It is 12/8/22 also used for bromeliads.

I found a bud on June 27th 2016 on a rare Bristol Queen Thanksgiving cactus. It's the of season and fun to watch bloom

Several months ago I got some cuttings from the nice folks here. The first batch rooted quickly and sent out lots of new shoots. Now they seem thinner and slightly limp.
Then the second cuttings. Must have gotten hot. They were thin and limp. I placed them in the soil and most died. The others are still are limp and thin but green.
So now that both sets are thin and limp. I must be doing something wrong. They are in core and kept damp not soggy. They are in the house and their window has a solar screen over it. The house is cool 74.
I have not had these in over 20yrs. What could be wrong?
Outside in the shade it is 90day and 55 night would that be better for them?

I keep both Thanksgiving & Easter cactus outside on my covered patio. They get bright northern light, but no direct sun. The daytime temperatures are in the 90s right now, with nights in the high 70s to low 80s. We do have high humidity. They are in cactus soil and I water them about every 3 days while it is so hot. I will cut back on the water as the temperature cools. I think your cuttings may not be getting enough light and you may be keeping them too moist. I'm not familiar with using core as a planting medium, so I can't advise on that. I always root cuttings in a mixture of potting soil and coarse sand, heavy on the sand side. My plants are doing very well with this treatment.
