Hi my name is Barbara, I have about 200 Butterfly Amaryllis bulbs that did not bloom last year. What can I do to make them bloom again? I really don't know very much about caring for and growing bulb but I would really like to learn. I am in Orange County Ca and have a large garden every year but I have not experience growing bulbs. They have all bloomed in the past but this year nothing. Thank you so much for your help

Barbara, Welcome! to All Things Plants!

Did you by chance cut the leaves off of your Amaryllis after they finished blooming? If so, that might be the cause of no re-bloom this year. It's okay to cut the dead flower stalks after the blooms have died but the bulbs use those leaves as food for the next years blooms.

I found this at Easy to Grow Bulbs about growing Amaryllis in outdoor beds: http://www.easytogrowbulbs.com...

And, also this information at White Flower Farms: http://www.whiteflowerfarm.com...

Welcome! Barbara, the other thing about amaryllis is that they may have been forced to bloom outside their regular season, the first time they bloomed. Sometimes after forcing, it takes a year for a bulb to recover and bloom at the right time. Here in Florida they bloom in springtime, March or April. Then we just leave the foliage for the rest of the year to re-form the bulbs for next spring.

If yours are planted in your garden, then they need a little fertilizer and regular water through the hot summer months after blooming is finished. It rains here through the summer, so that part is easy for us, but where you are, not so much. Come to think of it, your drought situation might be a part of the reason why they didn't bloom this year. Not enough water last year?

As Lin said, don't remove any foliage unless it is yellow or brown. Green leaves are making the plant produce a good bulb to bloom the next season.

Hi Barbara. Welcome! Amaryllis Papillon is a seriously gorgeous flower! May I ask how you came upon having so many? They must have put on quite a show for you when they bloomed.

There may be others with the common name of "Butterfly Amaryllis" but Butterfly Amaryllis (Hippeastrum papilio) is really beautiful!
