You can make a birdhouse in two minutes or less from an empty one-gallon water jug or a discarded flower pot.

I applaud your methods for putting to use items that would otherwise end up in landfills. And best of all you are making secure home for our birds. I love it!

I buy hanging baskets in the spring and when they are empty I used to put them in the wood shed which is open on the east side. One spring I noticed bird activity in that area and went out to check. In over a twenty plastic pots hanging on nails against the wall birds had built their nests. It was a small bird city. We, and many visitors, were entertained with the flights in and out and the constant bird chatter. Unfortunately, that fall a neighbor moved in across the street who keeps cats. I took the plastic pots out that winter so I would not be providing a feast for the cats come spring.

Wow Bonnie---Bet it was a sight to see with all your "city" dwellers!! I had to stop feeding our birds because of the feral cats in our area. Cried when they caught a few birds so I did the same thing and took away their temptation.
I hate losing plants....I know they are "just plants" but when you nurse them along and baby them and get them to grow, bloom, and be pretty and they die....it's like losing a friend..... Crying

It was a sight Kim and they got to the point where they ignored me if I did not get too close and I came and went and enjoyed the activities. There is nothing man made that can compare with the beauty of natures simple things.

That is too bad... feeding the birds has brought our family so much joy. We live out in the country, but our closest neighbour is a feral breeder. We try different methods to deter them from night time prowling, but during the day we've learned to give them a scare they won't soon forget. I don't remember the last time I saw a cat in the yard during the day.
