A Peek into the "Lasagna Method"

I call it the Lasagna Garden. I started it in March 2009, not realizing it needed a year for the newspaper and compost to cure and decompose the sod beneath. This new garden is 35 feet long and 25 feet wide.

Do you just start on top of existing sod? You don't have to dig out the existing sod? It looked as if there was sod there. If that is so, wow, that is great! Could the newspaper & mulch really kill out all the existing sod? We have Bermuda and it gets into everything and is tough to get out. But makes a beautiful lawn. But my, how it creeps! I'm afraid I am somewhat dumb on this method, so I'm very curious on details.
