Or you could just post the pictures on here, then he wouldn't have a choice, and could blame you when he goes off and buys a bunch of them this summer.

Thanks for the tip Sue...and thanks for posting the beautiful photos!!!

Tom, if I just post the photos then I put ATP in a position of copyright infringement. I have been asked specifically to not do that so I have to respect that request. Sorry! Don't worry I'll keep posting links...and those of you who have photos just keep on posting them! Not only do we get to enjoy them but we can all help Rob to overcome his phobia of looking and new types of irises!! Hilarious! Hilarious!

So I'll try posting the link for the 2014 photos and prices for Leonine Iris:

(Now it works, thanks Sue!!)

Someone asked about growing them in pots. It can be done. Joe Ghio sells his extra stock and his discarded reselect seedlings to a number of commercial nurseries. They grow and sell them in pots. However, I believe Joe or someone in our iris society said they drench them pretty thoroughly in fungicides. They are the hardest (of all the iris I grow) to transplant successfully. I don't like to think of how many I have killed. If you do manage to get plants, soak them in clean water until the small white roots start to grow. Then carefully plant them as the roots are very fragile. Keep them watered until they take.

If you really want to grow PCN's, try it like Ben Hager (one of the greats of iris hybridizing) did. He lived and grew irises in the central valley of California. His climate was certainly not what PCN's are used to. Cold in the winter and HOT and humid in the summer. Despite that, Ben hybridized PCN's that grew and won awards. The story that I was told was that he started with seed. He selected for plants the grew well in his climate. You can purchase seeds from the PCN Iris Society. They can give you more information.

Growing PCN's from seed is not like TB's. Most everything that grows and blooms is very pretty. And you can get a lot of different colors and patterns. Do your research on the conditions they like and give them a try.

Great information Carl, Thanks! I actually live about 65 miles south of Stockton, where Ben had his nursery/gardens, so that information is very encouraging! Thumbs up I lived in Stockton when he was there...but knew nothing about irises, so never got the honor of meeting him. Sad

For those of you who just like to see gorgeous irises be sure you click on Carl's link above for a special treat!!! (That included you Rob! Rolling on the floor laughing Rolling on the floor laughing )

I still cringe when I think about the first time I met Ben. It was my first Regional Convention and I was very new to iris. Ben's iris "Beverly Sills" was very big and had a lot of buzz. I was looking at a very pretty pink iris and said to the older gentleman (in a pith helmet) next to me that I thought it was 'at least as good as "Beverly Sills".' He just shook his head and said "Faint praise, indeed." It was later that I learned that Ben wore that helmet whenever he was out in the iris fields. Open mouth, insert foot.

He was indeed a gentleman and one heck of a hybridizer.

Marilyn, did you ever meet Keith Keppel or Larry Lauer when you were in Stockton? Stockton used to be a major hub in the iris world. Now they have almost all moved to Oregon.

In your quest to grow PCN's, look for the oldest varieties that are still easily available. They are known survivors. Hager lists "Canyon Snow" as a parent of one of his introductions. I think it originally came from Southern CA. It's still around.

No...sadly I was too busy going to college and starting my career to (not to mention living in rental apartments etc.) to be aware of the amazing opportunity that was in my own back yard. Sad I found out about it while chatting with Keith Keppel, but he didn't mention Larry Lauer living in Stockton too. Do you know what his garden was named?

Thanks again for the information on the PCN's. I tip my hat to you. I may try a couple next year and see if I have any luck! Thumbs up
