I'm with you Neal... I get excited when I see a lot of the new ones, but realistically, I want them to work in the garden with other plants... Well except for those new Iris only beds Smiling

I haven't been able to look until now... been crocheting Christmas stuff (and fighting stupid patterns)

So here's what I've got:

Clearly I'm not doing well enough in the Spoon dept.
Here's what I want:

Winterberry

A lightning strike too our power is out about an hour ago. Dave hooked up the house to the RV's generator (just a couple circuits) until he can figure out what's wrong with the other generator. Fun and games in the mountains.

I also don't keep a list by hybridizer. I have a couple Spoon TBs, but more SDBs. why is no one surprised?

I don't keep a list by hybridizers either, but I can re-sort my data base and then have them all together.

I have a fair sized Spoon iris wish list but I am waiting for the new catalog to come out.

I understand, Lucy ! ALL mine is in "pen and ink", and only SOME is put on the computer ! A lot of the things that I record are "typed out & printed" on the computer, and then kept in notebooks........I not only can find them better that way, but, I can take them into the garden, or anywhere else I need them...and, yes, all you "real" techies out there, I know I could take the laptop, or a "tablet', or even a "smart phone" with me ....but I'd either have it full of mud, lost, or stepped on in less than 10 minutes Sticking tongue out !

I have far more Spoon's that I want than what I have. But there is always next year!

...so you print a copy of your latest version of the database...sorted in whatever order you choose...take it out to the garden with you...make notes on that paper and get it good and muddy, them bring it in and update your database from it. Then you don't need the notebook to take up space...and whenever you need that piece of paper you print out the newest version! Hilarious! Hilarious! Hilarious!

I'm teasing...I don't have a working printer...so the theory falls short for me. But it does allow for easy sorting of information. I have 2 main lists: inventory and wishlist. Then I can sort them however I want. I currently have the inventory list sorted by Cultivar Name, Hybridizer, Class (TB, SDb, BB, etc.), and Year of Introduction and the Wishlist sorted by Cultivar name and by Hybridizer.

Once you get the hang of it the computer does make it easier to manage information...but it's the 'getting the hang of it' that is a catch for a lot of people. In the end...it's whatever works best for you! Thumbs up

I have both. I like working on the computer and it is quick and easy to sort. However, in the past I have lost both info and photos due to a power surge, hacking incident and just plain computer death. Now I keep files in a big zip binder and on the computer... and on a flash drive. I use the winter months to update the information in the binder.

The data on my computer isn't really what would be useful for me outside in the garden. I have hand made bed maps in a notebook that is more usefull outside. I am more inclided to take that out then my data base info. I use the data base for managing my irises, and my wish lists. My wish list is formated just like the data base, so I can cut and past info from the wish list to my iris list when I buy something. Then I can re-formate the information by sorting the data any way I want it. Ususally I like it sorted by bed. It's always good to back up things so you don't loose them. I am not good at doing that though. Some day I'm going to get bit! Glare

I hear you about backing up my data...I do it, but probably not often enough!! Yes, bed maps would be very difficult to try to manage on the computer unless you were a drafter, designer, or engineer and had Autocad. The computers make some things easier but they can't do everything...yet! I do like you Tom, my wish list and data base are in identical format so I can cut and paste between them. Hopefully most of the cutting is from the wish list and the pasting is to the database and not the reverse!!! Sticking tongue out

Have an external hard drive that backs up the computer drive once a week. Come photograph season, might change that to every day.

I learn so much here. Someone mentioned that permanent markers will fade from the plant markers - sometimes very quickly.
In between showers here I walked around to see how everything was doing...and some of the markers were almost completely faded! I got a soft lead pencil and re-wrote the names - I got to about half the irises when my back started complaining. I should be able to get to the rest this weekend, when sunshine is promised.

That's why maps are important. Also, if you get Paint markers, not just the ink or magic markers, they will last much longer.
