I've enjoyed looking through the pics. I especially like the tree peony that you say is the pinker one.

Question---I have a small spot in my pink garden where I might be able to fit a tree peony. I have a hybrid tea rose there right now. But there are cottage pinks nearby that are spreading. Would it hurt to put a tree peony in there? Would it be okay with the cottage pinks perhaps spreading over its roots?

Most of my peonies have came and went. Right after each one opened, it rained. Plus I had the "great" idea to take off the supports this year just to see if they would flop (they did).

This was Edulis Superba

This is two Red Charms with a Kelways Glorious sandwiched in between (not blooming yet here). In the autumn, we'll move the KG and let the Red Charms take over.

This is a pic of Kelways Glorious that I took today. It's the last of my peonies.

The thing to remember about the tree peony, as I too need to remind myself, is that they get bigger Smiling What started off as a space a foot or so high by 8 or 10 inches wide, becomes 4 feet or higher with a spread of 3-4 feet or more. The area where I have the two shown above, I used to have yellow rose shrubs in between the tree peonies, thinking that after the tree peonies would be done blooming I would have some color. Well, over a couple of seasons, the tree peonies decided that they owned the place, fighting the roses for the rule of the roost and winning out. Since then, I have placed clematis aside and behind and since they like to have their roots shaded, the tree peony provides that. They are nice companions. Or at least I am finding that it is something that works well. Lilies are another one that has survived the tree peony growth, though I have no idea how I would ever get a bulb out of that area if I wanted too.

So, I guess what I am saying is...with a tree peony, really provide it the room it needs to grow, it will use it in years to come Smiling

Thanks Chris for your kind words. The lavender-ish peony is quite nice. I think if it weren't next to the pink one, the color might not be as noticeably different, but it sure is. Just love those tree peonies!

Thanks for the quick reply. I guess I need to keep looking for an open spot for another peony. I need a bigger yard. Smiling

If you want to put more tree peonies in try to purchase the ones that are marketed as upright or dwarf. Most that are sold are semi relaxed or spreading it habit is not mentioned. Dwarf's are harder to find but they are out their. Alice Harding is one that gets about 3 X 3 and can be clipped to stay that short but they need to be placed so you can look up or into the plant. You just have to do some research.

I think this is 'Kronos' a tree peony that really puts on a great show every year with lots and lots of blooms.

Another tree peony, I really need to dig out the name. It's quite nice though often gets lost in amongst all the weeds that float over from the farmer's field.

'Coral Sunset' I realized that I had two of these, one I bought as a virtual unknown from a grower, but it is near neighbor the actual named 'Coral Sunset'. What a nice peony to have two of, I lucked out.

The ever hard to capture beauty of 'Cytherea'. I'd say it isn't fond of 90 degree heat and humidity here in May today. Another coral colored beauty.

And what Steve fondly calls the fried egg peony. Came from Klehm's at some point to Rotary Garden in Janesville, Wi. I donated some lilies and traded for a start of it. I like it.

Wow, they're off and blooming! Pink Hawaiian Coral is a beauty - is it fragrant?
