I have to correct myself. The 3 hours was just the time they spent decorating it. It took them all day to make the gingerbread and the icing and all that. Smiling

It is still very good work, and the longer time spent on it shows their dedication to the task, which many young people lack. Smiling

Go ahead and throw this in the sandbox, but i've always wanted to know if people eat the gingerbread houses, or save as a decoration for the following year? Team eat, or team save?

We normally leave the gingerbread house up for a while, then throw it away. We don't keep it for the next year so that we can make a new one every year. We don't eat it because the bread gets stale, and the candy that we used it not very good. Everybody that sees our gingerbread house says that its the best gingerbread house they have ever seen.

That's an option i obviously didnt consider, @jon. I was thinking you would have every years house out on display. From when you were 3 and 5, and the gb house was crooked and sloppy. Thank you for explaining. It is a beautiful house.

Beautiful! Was this house entered into a contest? I see another house right next to it?

It is adorable! A lot of detail went into making such a delightful gingerbread house. The only thing lacking is a Gingerbread Boy (or Girl). Future Home Designers and Decorators, Jon & Katie?

We read the Gingerbread Man, Gingerbread Boy, Gingerbread Girl, Gingerbread Baby, and Gingerbread Friends books in class in December. The 4 and 5 year old students love it! They get to decorate their own "foam" Gingerbread ornaments for their home Christmas Tree. We decorated the classroom door with a cookie sheet (made out of foil) and I placed all their Gingerbread Boys/Girls on the sheet for the school to enjoy. Some of the "cookies" were pretty funny. Little children have such a great imagination!

That's a great idea! A family Gingerbread House competition! Did the younger kiddos make one too? Are the walls made using a recipe and special baking pan? It's very interesting how it appears to be constructed.

Yes, we had three houses made: Trish&me, Katie&Jon and Abigail&Simon. They were all great but K&J's exceeded everyones.

There was a regular gingerbread recipe that they followed, and the walls were made using a special mold, something kind of, but not exactly, like this: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00PGVPUHQ/

Thanks, Dave! That's a cool mold set. I've not seen one before. Didn't know they even made them. Cool competition!

We tried to make them without a mold our first year...and the results were less than stellar. I figured we had many many years ahead of us making gingerbread houses, so I might as well invest a bit into it Green Grin! I bought 2 molds, each mold makes one house. We make a triple batch of gingerbread, fill 2 molds and roll out the rest on a pan for extras (like the front porch they made), and eat the rest Green Grin!

Next year the little boys will probably make their own as well. This year they only cared about eating it Whistling
