It looks like Encephalartos ferox, although the leaflets seem a bit narrow. If you could post a photo of the leaflets it could help. Encephalartos is an African genus.

Fred, I'm with Zig. Please post a photo of the leaflets.

Oh, I knew I was supposed to do something else today. Instead I spent the day cataloging bromeliads. So far I have 87 varieties. http://rumpfamily1.phanfare.co...

It's so humid here that my camera lense kept getting moist.

Ok, I put the camera outside some time ago to adjust to the humidity and then took some pics of this and that. Here's two shots of the unid'd cycad. Who knows what it is?

I'm going to guess Encephalartos gratus.

I googled that and came up with so many cycads that all look the same to me. Encephalartos transvenosus is also a candidate as are various others. I wish I knew how botanists know what they are growing or looking at. Maybe I should wait a little to see how this thing grows up. At this point I don't even remember where or when I got it.

I have another large fern which grows in the back in the excess water my RO system creates. It's a biggy and I've seen it grow in water.

I got a little help on this one and it turns out to be Dioon spinulosum. My original idea was well off target. *Blush*

Thanks, Zig. I just went outside and looked at mine and I think you are right. As soon as I saw the leaves I knew it wasn't E. ferox but it does look a bit like E. gratus. Cycads can be hard to ID.

I hope we're still talking about my cycad as now being Dioon spinulosum. The pics of this plant look good.

We are, Fred. You have a Dioon spinulosum there. I have one as well but it is not as big as yours.

This palm was all over the SC coastal area and I have no idea what it is. Anybody know?

It's a pindo palm, also known as a jelly palm as the fruit is edible. (Butia capitata)

I don't know Jim. I have a pindo and it's not silver like these trees. They seem to have the same drooping branch form though. Also, my pindo was hit hard by the cold. These trees in the Carolinas seem to be impervious to the cold up there. They sit right along Sabal Palms which just don't care.

There are blu/silver forms of pindo palms. It's very common. They are very cold tolerant, taking temps down into the low teans. It's hard to believe you had one of these get hurt in Naples.

I think my Pindo will not make it as the center core was frozen during the winter like so many other palms.

Hello, Robert. It's good to see you here as well. I have finished my cycad presentation and need to get with you for your review and advice. I'm sure your expertise will be appreciated on this thread as well.

Fred, according to Betrock's Guide to Landscape Palms, pindos grow well up in zone 8. You're in zone 10 so I'm at a loss as to your cold damage. Perhaps there is something else going on with your palm..

Well, many of my palms turned brown and black after we got hit with 20 some degree weather a couple times. I think when they are young they are much more susceptable to cold damage and then they are weak and any disease can kill them.

I think one of my Old Man's palms is making a slow comeback as is the pindo and the screwpine palm pictured here. If this winter stays relatively warm, all my palms should fully recover. The Royals are looking good again but need another year's growth before another freeze comes in to have a full crown.
