Cool! The butterfly looks very similar but the caterpillar is a little paler. But like I said, they can vary a lot depending on their UV exposure.

I had a neat thing happen this morning. I got back from getting my allergy shots and Dad was getting ready to haul all our yard waste to the dump. I looked over at this bromeliad that sits on the edge of my butterfly garden and there was a Monarch hanging off of it! It had just emerged; you can see the empty chrysalis to the left. I pulled all the milkweed out of there, as you guys know, but he was probably already in his chrysalis when I did that. I know I checked the milkweed before I trashed it. And one reason I pulled it when I did was because I didn't have a bunch of caterpillars on it. But this guy was sneaky. It's still a little cool outside, but warming up fast so I imagine he'll take flight soon.

(sorry about the quality)

Added edit - (copy above is so bad) -article details how Illinois plans on planting a lot of milkweed for Monarchs along tollways.
Nothing that's been done can ever be changed.

Jack, some of my environmental groups on Facebook were sharing that news about Illinois. Good times! I can plant all the milkweed I want but it's not going to help the migration and that's frustrating. Whenever I meet a guest at the museum that's from any state on the migration route, I talk about planting milkweed. And speaking of the museum, I am off in a bit to go share my wisdom. We're having our second BOGO ticket weekend in a row but it's Super Bowl Sunday so I have no idea how many people will be there. But pictures - and a shiny, new February thread - when I get back!

It may be February, but we still have butterflies! Find them here: The thread "February 2015 Butterflies, Moths & Larva" in Gardening for Butterflies, Birds and Bees forum
