Mine are sun scorched more than they were when I last posted. I am going to move them further back under the dogwood tree this fall. The tree just isn't providing enough shade in these last two years of drought.
I am hoping this is not going to cause permanent damage to the tree.
it's always something.
I'd rather weed than dust ... the weeds stay gone longer.

Since I love heucheras so much, I feel lucky that most do well here. We do get frost heaving, so I sometimes have to "replant" them in the spring. It is much harder on them if we don't get good snow cover, and that has become much less reliable here than it used to be.

Here are two of my favorite heucheras -- Pinot Gris and Brownies. Both are the villosa type, but Brownies gets gigantic. Look at the leaf size of Brownies compared to PG.

Julia, I have Palace Purple, Pinot Bianco, Green Spice, Plum Pudding, Vulcano, Mocha, and Snow Angel. I had a few of the more colorful ones, but they usually last 5-6 years and then start to struggle.

Oh Julia, I LOVE the big heuchs. Brownies is one of my favorites--the largest one there is so far. The villosa varieties by Delabroye perform very well here. Those are the only new varieties I will consider adding to my garden now.

I have Brownies as well and like it but love the small ones because I put them in containers. Big containers but still they can take up too much space sometimes.
I'm going to try this this year.
I put an Urban apple in a whiskey barrel and was thinking about putting some of the Falls series around it next Spring. I like the idea of a Caramel close to the size of Brownies.

While I consider certain of the heucheras to be among the most reliable perennials here, I have never had a heucherella make it over a winter. Too bad because I really like them.

They work a little better than heucherella, but they do tend to fade away within 2-3 years. I have tried about 4 different varieties with the same results.

The tiarrella are mostly good to zone 4. I have found that both heucherella and tiarrella like it shady rather than some of these heuchera that do well in sun.
The Tiarella also seem to like it on the dry side. The ones in the back of my garden with almost no direct light and the tree cover does not let much rain come through do the best.
Did you see the new feature on the Terra Nova site where you can see parentage maps of the different Heuchera ? This could be helpful in choosing which ones to get.
