Thanks for posting rule #11 Char. I should have done that originally to prevent the confusion.

And Fred, don't count yourself out of that medal. I've seen some beautiful "Lillian's"! Smiling

Instead of a few people coming up with these new rules, they should have queried the thousand of members for their input. I am sure that there's a reason and explanation for this. Waiting to hear it!

While the AHS can presumably add their own extra rules if they wish, they are the internationally recognized registration authority for the genus Hemerocallis and as such have to abide by the ICNCP (International Code of Nomenclature for Cultivated Plants).

Looking quickly through the ICNCP I can spot a couple of preclusions that might apply here. Also a name can't have more than 30 characters.

From the ICNCP:

You can't use a cultivar name that is so similar to another that it may cause confusion.

You shouldn't use a name that might give the impression the cultivar is related to or derived from another when it isn't.

This Stout rule may or may not relate to either of the above, but just to illustrate that the AHS has to abide by the ICNCP and therefore can't always do what the members would like.

It sounds to me like they are trying to make the Stout award more prestigious (Heisman), like retiring a football players jersey! Is there a daylily Hall of Fame?

The closest thing to hall of fame would be the Stout

The website page naming rule is slightly different from the rule in the pdf file.

From the web page http://www.daylilies.org/AHSre...

"12. The names of cultivars that have won the AHS Stout Medal may not be used with any one word prefix or suffix to create a new name subsequent to the cultivar having won the award.

Example 1: 'Satin Glass', 1968 Stout Medal Winner. 'Satin Glass Slipper', 'Red Satin Glass', and 'Starlight Satin Glass' are not allowed.
Example 2: 'Playboy', 1961 Stout Medal Winner. 'Playboy's Red Corvette', 'Little Playboy's Bride', and 'Starlight Playboy Racer' are not allowed "

Rule 12 on the web page states that the name of a previous Stout winner may not be used with any one word to create a new name.
However, it contradicts this in Example 2 because then 'Playboy's Red Corvette', 'Little Playboy's Bride' and 'Starlight Playboy Racer' should be allowed
because they each have two words added to the previous winner's name of 'Playboy'.

Making all sources/copies of the rule the same would reduce confusion.

I agree .... to confuse things further....I just did a quick search for Renee anywhere in a name on the AHS database. Renee has been used with both, one word and two or more words to make new names for registration, Renee won the Stout in '71. The most recent one is 2014, Brandy Renee. Looking at the registrations it would appear neither copy of the rule is/was being followed when using Renee in a name. Confused Blinking

Looks to me like common sense is prevailing over a written rule. 'Brandy Renee' as a daylily name is unlikely to be confused with plain ol' 'Renee'. None of the examples of names with 'Playboy' would be a cause of confusion with the Stout winner. Isn't that the aim? To prevent confusion between cultivars?

Hmmmm. I registered a flower called Lighthouse Satin Slipper and it was accepted. I guess because I didn't have the word glass in the name.
