Cindy,

'Downriver Butterfly' is really distinctive with those colors. I like it a lot! It's one of your own registrations, isn't it? I wonder how it would manage the hot, dry, windy side of Texas?

Yes it is one of mine Donald. Thank you!!! It is a bit of a slow grower and I think it does have some evergreen in its genetics from Black Plush so you never know. It may do very well in Texas. The colors in it vary with temps. Some days it looks more mauve.

I'm not sure dormant aspect of the hems is going to make any difference for me. Our winters are so unpredictable. One year might be better for dormants and the next better for evergreens. I have some of all kinds, so after they've grown for a few seasons maybe there will be some kind of indication on which do better. I expect it's more likely that some plants of each will manage okay and some plants of each will not. The last 72 hours have had a high of 34F according to thermometer with a low in the mid-teens. That's a long spell for us, but not rare either. I know the inevitable late freeze following a few weeks of warm weather isn't good for any of them. For the blooms, they will not be exposed to cool temps. Cool for me in bloom season would be overnight lows in the 60s. Day temps will be hot.

Well we are having a bad cold spell now Donald. It was zero when I got up this morning so I am hoping I don't loose any daylilies. Spring will tell.

I had several other daylilies that started with a "D" but I have noticed than the majority of the daylilies I have lost over the past two years have been dormants. It seems dormants have a very short life span in my garden.
Semi-dormants do better and Evergreens seem to be the direction I should go when choosing more daylilies.

I wanted to add that I was reluctant to post the statement above because I had developed the idea in my head that there was really not much validity to the almost "arbitrary" way the dormant, semi-dormant, and evergreen designations are arrived at. Still, thinking that the designations were almost meaningless in the actual growth patterns of the plants, I realized that when I lost a plant and looked for a common cause the only thing that stood out was the term "dormant". So I now think the terms have definite applicable uses for people in the deep south and far north, maybe not so much for a lot of people in between.

Dry heat and Desert rage are so nice!
You should put the picture of Desert Heat in the database, there is no picture. Smiling
