I have not tried this with amaryllis but I have balanced an iris rhizome over water so that the bottom of it was wet. It helped a lot so I am guessing it would be great for an amaryllis bulb also. That is a beautiful bulb in your photo, Paul.

I always did this with my amaryllis bulbs, most of them having been in garden centres and such or in packaging for several days. Works a treat!

It's a great idea for Amaryllis bulbs, the small jar is a perfect size for soaking the roots.

I didn't uproot mine from their pots last fall. They are in the greenhouse and I just stopped watering them. I am thinking maybe I should pull them out of the pots and give them this water soak boost and maybe add some hydrogen peroxide to the water? Has anybody done this?

I have never let mine sit in pots for that long. I force them and the let the tops grow and put them in the garden in late May after all chance of frost has passed so they can make a lot of energy for the next spring. This seems to work for me. If they are already in potting medium I would not uproot them. If you wanted to make them break winter dormancy I would just soak the pots bulb and all. Then treat them like a living plant until they begin to grow.

I agree Mary, just soak the pots in a pan of tepid water, but be careful not to leave them in there too long so that they become waterlogged.

Out of the12 bulbs that rested all but 3 have scapes or are in bloom, of course I am sure the other 3 will get scapes any day now.

My bulbs are still in the pail where I tossed them after digging from the garden last fall. Must pot them up. Mayhap I will try the soak thing to wake them up.
