coleus outside did not survive
begonias have been cut down by gardeners(will they grow when the spring comes?)
impatiens.....most of them look very bad.....
my question is.......it looks like to me that the plants that are thickstemmed might survive.its not knowledge just a feeling that they are stronger.on the other hand they contain more water in them wich makes more chance for rotting in cold and wet weather/
p.s.two of my indoor coleuses are keeping well.(in a gallery near a window for light)the indoor impatiens are dying,i think because of drop of temperature in the gallery although the place at day time is like a nursery because it is high above the class and captures the heat.it is amazing to follow the plant behaviour.

Is it getting below freezing? If so, survival is questionable. If it is only that cold occasionally, covering with a sheet overnight can help.

thanks for your reply and advice.sometimes it is below freezing.the plants outside are not mine...belonging to the neighbourhood.i cannot cover them.i still did not yet get an answer.

Neither coleus nor impatiens will tolerate freezing. If it doesn't freeze too much they may just be damaged (look mushy) and then recover. If you don't get much cold I'm not sure about begonias, and it would also depend on the type of begonia and how cold it gets for how often. They'll likely go mushy somewhat too, even if not killed. Do you know what kind of begonias they are, or can you post a picture?

thanks for your reply.i dont know the names of the begonias....i know they grow very high like 80 centimetres with big red flower.it is not the tuberos one

That's tall! I'm not familiar with a begonia that gets that tall, the largest I've grown is the Dragon Wing, which probably maxes out at half the height you're seeing. But to narrow it down, does it look anything like this?



This is not the best example, but it gives an idea to narrow down the choices.

I was thinking in your climate a tuberous begonia might have a chance of surviving mild and brief freezes in the ground, but any others would at least be damaged if not killed in more severe or prolonged freezes.

You could try asking on the "Annuals" or "Containers" forums as there may be people there more familiar with other types of begonia.

I have had coleus and impatiens drop seed that grew the next year. They bloomed and were really pretty. If it gets anywhere near freezing they die.

If they are dragon wing Begonias, they're fairly hardy. One survived in my Mom's yard last winter (deciduously.) We had an ice storm, 2 nights in a row in the teens, and about 6 weeks straight of below freezing every night.

If you don't like all those notifications, start using the forums for your specific plants. There's a forum for Coleus, and I think begonias might be under Perennials and impatiens would be Annuals. (although they are perennial for me here in Florida)
