For a big bloom try T-Rex.

I grow one almost like it only not as big so I keep debating about getting T-Rex. C & T iris patch have it listed really reasonably. I have an order I am filling out with them so.....

I saw a bloom of 'William A. Setchell' once that measured 10" top to bottom and nearly 6" across. It was huge. The tall stalks were stout, but still had to be staked. I've never grown it myself, but it's known for having one of the largest bearded iris blooms. It has the old form of its age. Introduced in 1938, I think other purple iris of around the same vintage have been distributed under the name, but if the bloom is really large its probably correct.

Yes, it was. It grew in great soil and had a lot of protection from the wind. Nearly anytime it bloomed they reached about 8" top to bottom. Very consistent. I was always jealous of the natural growing conditions it grew in, which I don't have. The couple that grew it often cut some, but their idea of cutting a bloom was to have the stem just barely long enough to sit in a glass! Those huge blooms looked almost grotesque with the stems cut off like that. Smiling I used to give them iris that wouldn't grow well for me and for them they would grow beautifully. Location, location, location.

That is a really bright one Sherry. On early cloudy spring days it would be like a beacon in the garden.
